"Kirsten's Penguin Story."
by

Once upon a time there were three penguins, the littlest penguin was very smart. One day, their mother said, "My little penguins you are getting big now so, I want you to move out and make your own houses." So off they went. "Oh," said their mother, "and watch out for the Big Bad Polar Bear."

So the three penguins went out into the snow covered land to find good places to build their homes. The first little penguin was lazy. He just built his house out of snowflakes. It was pretty but it was not very strong. The second little penguin built his house out of snowballs. The third little penguin built her house out of blocks of ice, which were nicely fitted together. It was a very strong house.

Later that day, the first little penguin was playing outside his house when he heard a THUMP, THUMP, and BUMP.

"Oh-oh!" thought the first little penguin; "I had better hide in my house."

He was right, it was the Big Bad Polar Bear. The Polar Bear sniffed at the snowflake house and then sneezed and the house fell down. He ate that penguin up.

The next day, the second little penguin was making more snowballs outside of his house when he heard a THUMP, THUMP, and BUMP.

"Oh No!" cried the second little penguin, "I have to hide!"

He was right, it was the Big Bad Polar Bear. The Polar Bear sniffed at the snowball house and thought they looked good enough to eat, so he did, penguin and all.

The next day, the third little penguin was spraying water on her house to make it nice and strong when she heard a THUMP, THUMP, and BUMP.
"Oh My!" she cried and ran into her house.

It was the Big Bad Polar Bear. The Polar Bear sniffed at the ice block house but could not smell anything. He circled the building but could not find any way to get a grip on it. He tried and tried but could not get at the smart little penguin. So he got tired and left.

Later that day the penguin Mother called the third little penguin and told her how proud she was of the way she built her house to survive.
