O

nce upon a time there was a mommy donkey and a daddy donkey. One beautiful spring morning the mommy donkey had birth to a little baby donkey. Everyone in the woods came to watch the beautiful baby donkey being welcomed into the world. But there was one certain someone who was not wanted. Her name was Marlena. She was the wicked fox witch of the woods. She was an outcast as a pup because of her powers, but learned to use her disadvantages to get revenge toward all the other creatures in the woods, even the ones who hadn't ever made fun of her.

Marlena decided to bestow a curse upon the little donkey. She gave him the curse of being born without a tail. She wanted him to be an outcast just like her. This made the mommy and daddy donkey very upset, but they knew there was nothing that could reverse any of Marlena's horrible horrible spells. They decided to love him just as they would a normal child.

Four springs have come and gone. And just as suspected Little donkey without his little tail was the outcast of all his playmates. They laughed and teased and taunted him until he wept himself all the way home. He always thought to himself that if there were anyway to find the wicked witch he would, and he would politely ask her to give it back.

Finally after another terrible day of getting teased and made fun of, Little Donkey got fed up. He went straight home and demanded his mother and father to let him find Marlena so that he could get his tail back. His mother and father knew how much he hurt because of his little missing tail, and though sad and worried, decided to let Little Donkey go on his journey. His mother packed him some food and his father gave him a blanket and candles for warmth. That very night Little Donkey went out to get his little tale back!
It was very dark out and Little Donkey had only gone a little ways but he was already getting scared. He kept imaging hearing things in the bushes, so he stopped for a little bit. He got himself so worked up that he fell down right there and just started to weep. Then all of a sudden a dark shadow appeared out of the bushes. Little Donkey ran to hide behind a tree but when he looked up he saw an old women standing there. She looked like a peasant from the village and looked as if she hadn't eaten for days. She asked Little Donkey if he had any food he could spare her. Little Donkey was a very polite donkey and of course gave her part of his homemade bread with Jam.

After eating the bread quite rapidly, something amazing happened. A big light formed around the peasant woman blinding Little Donkey. When Donkey looked up it wasn't the peasant woman he saw anymore. It was a beautiful woman with wings and a very pretty silk dress. The woman told Little Donkey not to be frightened. She explained that she was the good witch of the woods. She told Little Donkey that since he had been so kind to share his food with her that she was going to bestow a blessing of her own upon the little donkey. And with a flick of a wand the good witch gave Little Donkey wings of his own. And they weren't just any wings. They were glittery and silky with almost every color in the rainbow. Little Donkey was so happy and flew up into the air immediately. Of course he fell right back down. He wasn't quite used to flying yet. Little Donkey asked the witch why she gave him the wings, and she told him that she had known what his journey was about. She explained to him that she could not give him his tail because only the witch who gave him the curse could reverse it, but that she could give him something that was much more beautiful and a lot more useful. This made Little Donkey very happy.

Little Donkey thanked the witch for her beautiful gift she had given him and promised to always be polite to everyone he met. He started back home without another thought of his missing tail, or the evil witch Marlena.

Of course Mother and Father donkey were very pleased with Little Donkey's new gift and were delighted to see him happy for once. All of Donkey's playmates were very jealous of donkey, but finally decided that they were very sorry and asked him to play with them all the time. Donkey knew that even with his tail he would never be as happy as he was now. Never again would he have to weep on his way home. Now he could fly there.
