by
Anna

M
alcolm Harper had a sucsessful job and a wife, but no children. One day, a soothsayer came and said that of Malcolm would be born a strong baby girl named Deirdre. Because of her, three powerful men would be lost. When she was born that Spring, her mother and father feared her power, so they sent her to a foster mother. One cold night when Deirdre was 18, she woke to the yells of a huntsman calling "Let me in! I am a hunter far from home and I need warmth and shelter!". She let him in. The hunter saw her beauty and said he would tell King Connachar about her.
Two days later, there was a knock on her door. It was the king and he took her to his palace. Later, while Deirdre was walking in the courtyard, she saw Naois, son of Uisnech, and his brothers. He saw her and took her to Scotland. The king was furious, so he sent a letter as a trick to get Naois, his brothers, and Deirdre to the palace. Naois wanted to go but Deidre did not. She said that she had a dream that three hawks with blood-stained beaks were coming to Scotland. Naois decided to go. King Connachar saw them coming and were afraid of what she would do to him. So he asked his wizard to do something to stop them from coming. The wizard made a big, gray sea with pointed waves that were razor sharp on one side and coated with a deadly poision. Deirdre survived, but Naois didn't. They buried him on one side of the river. Deirdre killed herself and was buried on the other side. Two pine trees grew on top of each of the graves and connected over the water.
