ずっとずっとむかし、中国の南の地方に２人の兄弟がいました。名前をカイ・ジとカイ・ペンといいました。２人はいっしょうけんめい働いて、家族をやしなっていました。

兄弟は毎日、朝早く起きると、森へ行って、木を切ります。それから市場へ行って、木を売ります。夜になると、ようやく家路へとつきます。

何年かすぎて、とうとう森には木が一本もなくなってしまいました。国の大切な森をだいなしにしてしまったのです。

これを聞いた王様はたいへんお怒りになりました。そして家来に、カイ・ペンのおしりを３０回、打つようにと命じました。カイ・ジは「カイ・ペンのおしりをぶつなら、ぼくのことも同じようにぶってくれ」と、いいました。そこで２人して、３０回ずつ、おしりをぶたれました。

けれども王様はこの後、人々から兄弟が家族をやしなうために木を切っていたと聞き、２人にわるいことをしたと、こうかいしました。

ong before your time, in the southern province of China, there were two brothers. They were Cai Zi and Cai Peng. They worked hard all day long to earn enough money to support the family.

Every day, they would get up early in the morning to go to the forests to cut down the trees. Then, they would go to the marketplace to sell the wood. When it was very late, they would head for home.

As time flew, all the trees in the forests were gone. They had done alot of damage to the forests in their country.

When the emperor knew about this, he flew into a rage. He ordered his men to give the Cai Peng 30 slaps on his bottoms. Cai Zi said that if Cai Peng had to go through all this, he would agree to go through it too. So, they were given 30 slaps on their bottoms.

After the emperor heard from the citizens that the brothers were doing this for a living, he felt really bad.
