"The Boy in the Mirror"

Pete's cousins were coming for the weekend. He would be two this Saturday. Now mummy was thinking, "Pete's a big boy now. It would be nice if he and his cousins could sleep in the same room. The spare room is big enough for the six of them. It just needs a few beds and some toys." Mummy and Daddy went to the spare room when Pete was sound asleep. They got three beds and a comfortable couch from the attic. They dusted and cleaned the furniture. Mummy also found some curtains and a full-length mirror. "I don't think Pete has ever seen a mirror before", said mummy, "and it's about time he had his own room. He will be two years old in a week." You see Pete has been sleeping with his parents ever since he was born. He had never seen a mirror because the mirror was kept in the dressing room and Pete didn't care to go to the dressing room to get dressed. Then mom got a box of toy soldiers from the trunk for Dick, a doll house for Debbie, a teddy bear for Joe and Pete, a baby doll for Marcia, and a big book for Christie. All these toys had belonged to either mummy or daddy.

The next day mummy explained to Pete that he will be sleeping in this room when his cousins will be here. Pete was only too happy about it. But wait, he had to first explore the room. "Ah! there's a comfy couch and there is a big bed. Wait a minute! What is the doorway without a door?" Actually the 'doorway' was the full length mirror. "It looks as if leads to another room", thought Pete. He tried to go through the 'doorway' but he couldn't pass through it. Pete noticed something else. A boy! "Why!", exclaimed Pete, he looks just like me in the photographs. He looked at the boy and he pushed his knuckles at the glass. The boy in the mirror did the same. "Well", said Pete, "his knuckles can't be that hard which means an invisible door is between us. The doorway must lead to a magical room".

That night he slept with his parents in their room because the spare room wasn't ready yet. He suddenly woke up. Then he started to think about the boy and the 'doorway'. He slowly sneaked out of the room and went to the spare room. The boy from the magical room had also come. But this time he was inside the spare room. "Hello", he said, "I managed to get out of the magical room. I kept feeling the invisible door until I touched an invisible knob. I turned it and the invisible door opened. But as I was coming out, the doorknob fell and as it is invisible I won't be able to find it and we won't be able to lock the door now. The evil wizard, who imprisoned me in the magical room, will not only get me but you also. He hates boys because a few boys teased his ugly daughter."

Pete was cold with fear. Pete caught the boy's hand and both of them ran to the attic to hide. But the attic had another doorway and the wizard came out of it. The wizard had a long beard. His eyes were a mixture of bright green and gold. He had two sharp yellow teeth sticking out of his evil grinning mouth. He wore a long black and purple robe and a black pointed hat. He caught sight of the two boys and he said in a voice that howled like the wind, "Aha, there you are, and you got another boy. You both shall pay for teasing my daughter." Pete cried out to the man, "We didn't tease your daughter. It was some other boys." But the wizard only laughed wickedly and rushed after the boys. Pete grabbed his friend and ran to the dressing room and caught sight of another doorway. And both of them sped out of the room. They found themselves back at the spare room. The wizard was already there grinning at them. It was such a surprise that Pete screamed, "Maaaammyee".

The next moment he was sitting in the spare room's couch, his face covered with cold sweat. Mummy and daddy were looking at him anxiously. He accepted the cold water mummy gave him. He went to sleep. The next day, he showed the 'doorway' to mummy and he also showed her the boy in the mirror. Mummy laughed when he called the boy to play with him and told him all about mirrors and explained that the wizard was just a dream. Soon his cousins came and so did uncles and aunts. His birthday was a grand success. After the weekend, everyone left. That night, Pete picked up the piece of cake he had been saving and went to his new room. He kept the piece of cake In front of the boy in the mirror. He smiled at him and went to sleep. While he slept, a mouse came and ate the piece of cake.
