「カリ、カリ、カリカリ、ニャ〜」

白い毛に黒の点々、緑の目、あばれんぼうの子ネコがジャンプして、わたしの背中に落ちてきました。わたしが家にかわいい小さな子ネコを連れてきたこと、これがすべての始まりでした。子ネコは大きな目をしていました。だっこすると、まるで「いいたいことは分かっているよ」というような顔をしています。ネコのお医者さんが名前は「小さなあくま」だよと、教えてくれました。最初はその理由が分かりませんでした。あとからよ〜く、分かるのだけど、最初はぴったりの名前が見つからなかったのだろうと思っただけでした。そこでわたしは、ネコにラッキーという名前をつけました。

ラッキーは食べ物をふしぎな森のように思って、食べようとも、近くによろうともしません。ラッキーはタビサのドライフード、クランチー・チャンクスだけ、食べました。まるでそれしか、食べるものがないみたいに。ラッキーは「グルルルル」と、タビサにまたうなりました。

ラッキーに大きな茶色のはこから飛び出すことを教えた日、その日のことはわすれられません。ラッキーの小さな白い足はネコ砂まみれ、毛はクシャクシャ、むじゃきな目がキラキラしています。ラッキーは飛びかかるまねをしました。そして体をかたくして、はこの一番上に上りました。

ダニエルとキャロリンとわたしは、ラッキーにがんばってといいました。ラッキーがジャンプ！ラッキーははこをひっかきました。はこがいたかったのか、ラッキーは飛び上がりました。

「キャロリン、ダニエル」と、ママがよんでいます。

「今、いくわ」とダニエルがさけびました。わたしたち３人は後ろを向きました。するととつぜん、何かがわたしの背中に乗っかりました。

「ラッキー」わたしはためいきをついて、いいました。「ほんとうにいつもこうなんだから、小さなあくまちゃん」

cratch, scratch. Mew."

A kitten, a white, black spotted, green eyed, monstrous kitten jumped up and landed on my back. It all started when we brought a cute little kitten to the house. It was very wide eyed. When I first held him he looked as though he knew what I was saying. The vet said his name was Little Devil, I didn't know why, but I was about to find out. Maybe they couldn't find a name that will actually fit him, I thought. I named him Lucky.

Lucky treated his food like it was a mysterious forest that he didn't want to try or go near. He preferred Tabitha's crunchy chunks of dry food. He thought it only belonged to him. "Grrrr". Lucky just growled at Tabitha again.

Well the day we taught Lucky to jump out of the big brown box was a day I won't forget. His little white paws were full of litter, his fur ruffled, and his eyes full of innocence, that was not good. He pretended to pounce. He stiffened and jumped onto the top of the box.

Danielle, Carolyn, and I encouraged Lucky to jump and to our surprise he jumped. He scratched the box a little The box seemed to yell and jump from the pain.

"Charlon, Danielle," Mom called.

"I'm coming" Danielle yelled. We all three turned around. All of a sudden I felt something on my back.

"Lucky" I sighed. "You will always be Lucky, my little devil."
