クリスティンはイライラしていました。親友のベスと、突然、仲が悪くなったからです。理由もぜんぜん分かりません。ベスに電話しても、手紙を書いても、何も言ってきません。ベスはただ、クリスティンと話したり、会ったりしたくないようでした。

「ああ」と、クリスティンはため息をつきました。「ベスが話をしたくないのなら、それならベスが後悔するだけよ」でも本当は、クリスティンはさびしくてたまりません。友だちでなくなるのは仕方なくても、せめてその理由だけでも聞きたいと思いました。

朝、クリスティンは、学校におくれそうになっていることに気がつきました。バーンシル先生には、今度ちこくしたら、居残りになるとおどかされています。クリスティンは全速力で走って、ベルと同時に教室のドアをすりぬけました。ベスはいつもの席にすわっています。ところがクリスティンがすわろうとすると、「クリスティン、わたし、マンディと席を変わりたいの。リサのとなりにすわらなくちゃいけないから」と、クリスティンは「なぜリサのとなりにすわらなくてはならないの？」と、たずねました。
「なぜって、ええと、リサの数学を助けてあげるからよ」と、ベスは急いで答えました。
「ああ、そう」クリスティンがベスに言えたのはこれだけでした。ベスは教科書や文房具を集めると、マンディと席を変わりました。マンディがクリスティンのとなりに来ました。その日、ランチタイムまでは何も起こりませんでした。ところがお昼休みに、リサがやってきてマンディのかみの毛を引っぱり始めました。そしておどろいたことに、ベスもいっしょになって引っぱっているのです。クリスティンはマンディのそばへ行くと、「ベス、いったいあなた、何をしているの？マンディとは友だちじゃないの？」と、いいました。
「友だち、わたしが？」と、ベスが笑いました。「今はリサがわたしの親友よ！」そう言うと、ベスとリサはうでを組んで、笑いながら部屋を出ていきました。

クリスティンはマンディのことを助け起こしました。そしてその時、だれが本当の親友だったか、知ったのです。

risten was annoyed. Her best friend, Beth, had fallen out with her and she had no idea why. She had tried phoning her, calling for her, even writing to her, but Beth simply did not want to talk to or see her.

"Oh, well" Kristen sighed,"if she doesn't want to talk, she doesn't want to talk, and that's her loss!" But deep down she really missed Beth, and she was going crazy! She wouldn't mind that much if Beth wasn't her friend, but Beth could at least tell her why she wasn't her friend in the first place.
Kristen realised that she was late for school, Miss Burnsile had said if she was late again, she would be in detention. Kristen ran, as fast as she could, and slid in the door of the classroom, just as the bell was ringing. Beth, as usual, was sitting at their normal table, but when Kristen came over, Beth said, "Kristen, I'm switching seats with Mandy, because I have to sit beside Lisa."
"Why do you have to sit beside Lisa?" Kristen said quizzicaly
"Because...em..because...she needs help with her maths."
Beth said in a rush.
"Oh" was all Kristen could say to her. Beth gathered up her stuff, and switched with Mandy, so Mandy came to sit beside Kristen. The day went alright, up until lunchtime. At lunchtime, Lisa came over and started pulling Mandy's hair, and ,much to Kristen's surprize, Beth was joining in! Kristen marched over and said, "What on earth are you doing Beth? I thought you were Mandy's friend,"
"Me, friends with her?" Beth laughed. "I'm Lisa's best friend now!" and they walked off laughing arm in arm.
Kristen helped Mandy up, she now knew who her real friends were.
