ある夜、アフリカのまずしい６人家族が、丸太と木で作った家の中で寝ていました。すると馬に乗った男たちがやってきて、家族は目を覚ましました。そのうち、煙の匂いがしてきました。あわてて窓の外を見ると、家の半分が火につつまれています。家族は急いで家から走り出ると、火を消そうと、水を取ってきました。ようやく火を消すことができましたが、ほかに家を持たない家族は、そのまま焼けた家の中でくらすことになりました。子どもたちは燃えてしまった家がいやで、両親にこんなことを言いました。

「もう一軒、お家を建てることはできないの？お家を見てよ！全部、燃えちゃってるよ！」

「おまえたちは、何もしていない私たちに文句を言うのかい？」と、両親は怒っていいました。

「ちがうよ。ぼくたちは新しい家がほしいだけ」

「そんなことはできないわ。今持っているものを大切に使わないと」

子どもたちは頭にきて、その日の夜、自分たちだけの新しい家を作ることにしました。両親もきっと新しい家を見て、怒ったことを後悔することでしょう。

夜、子どもたちは起きると、外に出て、家を作り始めました。はじめに材料を集めます。木こりの切った丸太、あちこちに落ちている小枝、念のためにワラ、それから家の近くに散らばっている木、それから他の材料も。

子どもたちの家は２時間で、ほとんど完成してしまいました。そして朝までに、新しい家ができ上がりました。両親は朝、きれいにぬられた、美しい家を見つけておどろきました。家の中を見ると、子どもたちがいます。両親はがっかりしてしまいました。子どもたちがあんまり自分勝手だからです。そこで両親は子どもたちの家を燃やしてしまいました。子どもたちの小屋はすっかり燃えてしまいました。

子どもたちはカンカンに怒り、両親のことをけいべつしました。子どもたちは次の日の夜、散歩に出かけることにしました。外を歩きながら、子どもたちは両親になにか仕返しをしようと思いました。いっしょうけんめい作った家を燃やしてしまったのですから！

両親のほうはあれから、家を燃やしたことを反省していました。子どもたちがいっしょうけんめいしたことを、ほめてやるべきだったのです。

次の日、両親は子どもたちのために、新しい家を建てました。夜、子どもたちが外に出ると、そこにはきれいな家が建っていました。子どもたちはその家をどこかで見たような気がして、おどろきました。そしてふしぎな気持ちになりましたが、理由は分かりません。とつぜん、

「サプライズ！！」という声がしました。

子どもたちはびっくり。両親が笑いながら、ドアの前に立っています。子どもたちはその家が、この前の夜に自分たちの建てた家とそっくりなことに気がつきました。

はじめ、子どもたちは怒りました。両親がこの新しい家を作るためにどんな苦労をしたか、知らなかったからです。けれども両親があまりにうれしそうにしているので、怒りつづけることはできませんでした。子どもたちは両親のそばに近づくと、にっこり笑いました。そして家族はしっかりとだきあいました。それから両親は、４人の子どもたちに向かって語り始めました。

「私たちは、子どものやったことをほめるべきでした。あなたたちあなのいうことを聞かず、４人がせっかく建てた家を燃やしてしまいました。子どもたちの愛を燃やしたのと同じことなのに。ごめんなさいね」

家族はこの家に名前をつけることにしました。名前は世代を超えて続いていくことでしょう。その家の名前はシャンバといいます。

ne night, a poor African family of 6 was asleep in a house built with logs and wood. They were awakened by horses with men on them. It started to smell like smoke and when they looked out of the window, they saw half their house on fire. They ran out of their house as fast as they could just to get the fire out. They got water and removed the fire from their house quickly. They had enough water to remove the fire, but they had no choice but to still live in the now burnt house. The kids did not appreciate their house and spoke to their parents about it.

"Can we just build another house for us? Look at our house. It's all burnt up!"

"Are you getting angry at me for something I didn't do?" said the angry parents.

"No we are just asking if we can build another house?"

"No! I do not allow you to. We have to make use of what we have now."

The kids were upset so they decided that in the middle of the night they will build a home for themselves. This is to pay back their parents for getting angry at them.

That night, the kids got up in bed, went outside, and started to build a home. They first collected materials like logs broken down by woodsmen, twigs lying all over the place, straws just in case, wood that was found somewhere near their house, and other useful materials.

A couple of hours later, the kids almost finished building. Finally, they completed their new home. The parents found out the next morning that there was a beautiful house, painted and all, outside their home. When they wanted to see it, they saw their children inside and were surprised. The parents were also very frustrated. They burnt the house because the kids were selfish to the parents and didn't tell them that they had a home; while the parents stayed in
the burnt house. The hut was fully burnt.

How mad the kids were! They despised their parents so much just at that moment. They decided to take a walk the next night. While walking, they were deciding what they will do with their parents because it is really annoying when someone ruins your hard work.

And later, the parents realized that they did something wrong. They should have appreciated their children's hard work.

The next day, the parents built another home for the kids. That night, when the kids were taking a walk, they saw a beautiful home. They were surprised because they had never seen this home before. There was also something very strange about it,. they didn't know what though. Suddenly

"SURPRISE!!!"

The kids were surprised. Their parents, smiling and all, were standing on the doorway of that queer house looking at them. Suddenly the kids knew. This looked almost like the house they had built the other night!

At first, the kids were very angry. They didn't know why their parents had to go through all that trouble making a new home, when they made one so nicely the other night. But, of course, they did't want to show their anger because their parents looked really happy. So they went over to their parents and smiled at them. Then they hugged their parents very tight. Then after an awkward moment, the parents let go and spoke to all 4 of them.

"We should have appreciated what you did. We didn't listen to your explanation and burnt the house that you 4 had built. It's like saying we burnt your love for us. Were sorry."

They agreed with the house and decided to give a name to it so it can be passed on from generation to generation. Now, it's called a shamba.
