あるところに、ひとりの少年がいました。少年の名前はチャーリーといいました。チャーリーは本を読むのが、大好きです。昼も、夜も、雨の日も、雪の日も、お天気の日も本を読みます。チャーリーのお気に入りはアクションストーリーです。チャーリーは、お話の中にいる自分を想像して、本を読むのでした。

ある日、チャーリーは「ピートの冒険II：仮面の男」を読んでいました。チャーリーは本のタイトルが少し変だとは思いましたが、気にしませんでした。アクションとゾクゾクするお話でいっぱいです。チャーリーは、仮面の男の深くて暗いどうくつの、ぬるぬるした冷たい地面まで、感じることができました。

チャーリーは、ふと顔を上げました。あたりは真っ暗です。そこへちょうちんの明りが、暗やみにさしこみました。それはピートでした。マスクをした男の冷たいほらあらの中で、チャーリーのとなりにすわっています。そう！チャーリーは本の中に入っていたのでした！

「さあ、用意はいいか、チャーリー？」と、ピートがいいました。「仮面の男を探しに行くんだ」
「どうしてぼくの名前を知っているんだろう？」と、チャーリーは考えました。

ふたりがほらあなの奥に入っていくと、空気がだんだんしめって、冷たくなってきました。チャーリーはみぶるいしました。背中に冷や水をかけられたような気分です。とつぜん、ほらあなの奥から、物音が聞こえてきました。仮面の男だ！チャーリーとピートは、さらに深く、深く、ほらあなの中を進んでいきました。何が起こるか、見当もつきません。あちこちにきしみやかげがあります。こんなにこわいことはありませんでした。

チャーリーはこわさのあまり、走ってかべにぶつかって、そのまま気を失ってしまいました。気がついた時、チャーリーは病院にいて、ピートがそばに立っていました。チャーリーは混乱して、またねむってしまいました。

次に気がついた時には、チャーリーは家にいて、ピートの冒険 II をむねの上においていました。チャーリーはあわてて、本を開けました。すると１ページ目を読んだことがないことに、気がつきました。その上、お話は仮面の男ではなく、ドラゴンのことなのです。チャーリーは、わけが分からなくなりました。そこでチャーリーは外に出ました。すると木の下には、「ピートの冒険 II：仮面の男」が落ちていました。チャーリーは本を拾うと、家に持って帰りました。いつかきっと、またお話にもどるぞ！

nce upon a time there was a boy. His name was Charlie. Charlie liked to read. He read day and night, rain, snow, and sunshine. His favorite kind of books was action books. He loved how it felt like you were really there.

One day he was reading a book called "The Adventures of Pete II: The Masked Man." Now Charlie thought the book's title was kinda lame, but he couldn't put it down. It was full of action and excitement. He could almost feel the slimy, cold ground of the Masked Man's deep, dark cave.

Charlie looked up. It was pitch black. Then a lantern light showed threw the darkness. There was Pete, sitting next to him in the chilling cave of the Masked Man. Charlie was in the book!

"Get ready Charlie," said Pete, "We're going to go look for the Masked Man."
"How did he know my name?" thought Charlie.

As they walked farther into the cave the air got damper and colder. It gave Charlie the chills. He felt a shiver down his back. He didn't like this too much. All of the sudden there was a crash coming from deep inside the cave. The Masked Man! Charlie and Pete made their way deeper and deeper and deeper into the cave. They did not know what to expect. There was a creak and a shadow everywhere they turned. It was truly scary.

So scared, Charlie ran into the wall and passed out. The next thing he knew he was in the hospital with Pete standing over him. Charlie was confused so he went back to sleep.

The next thing he knew he was in his home with The Adventures of Pete II on his chest. He opened it up. Then it occurred to him that he had never even read the first page. And, now that he thought about it, It wasn't the Masked Man, but the Dragon. Charlie was so confused. Then he was outside under and tree with "The Adventures of Pete II: The Masked Man" under his feet. He picked it up and went into his house. Some day!
