"The Way To Friendship"
by

here once was a cat named Sam. He was big and fat with long, fluffy white
fur. He would lay around all day and eat, sleep, eat, eat, eat, and MORE sleep.
And then he would go back to eating again. Sam had no friends, except his owners, the Sullivans'. They fed Sam until his belly was a round as a soccer ball. They rubbed his stomach, too, while they were watching t.v. They loved him very much.

But one day, they got a new pet. Another cat! But this cat was nice and slim,
and had big, pointy ears and big beautiful bronze eyes. He short fur was red and white, and he had no scars or raggedy fur, like Sam. The Sullivan man called him Andy. The family just LOVED him.
A few weeks later,Sam went up to the boy's room and lay on his bedspread . It was soft and
squishy, with race cars all over it. Oh, how he wished he were dead right now,
and then everyone would feel sorry for him.

Suddenly, there was a scratching at the door, and it slowly crept open. And there
was Andy, the perfect cat.

"What do YOU want?" Sam asked nastily. Andy started to turn away, frightened
by the way Sam had addressed him. Then Sam said, "Uh, sorry."

Andy jumped up onto the bed. "I just came in to say hello, Sammy." Andy smiled.

"It's not SamMY, numb-skull," Sam the cat replied. Andy put his head down.

"I just want you and I to be friends. We're both cats, so...." Then Sam
started in.

"Who has been getting all the attention? YOU! Who has been getting canned
food every single night? YOU! Who has not been outside for a walk in two weeks?
ME! Who has been sitting here, lonely, no love or attention, waiting impatiently
for someone to at LEAST pet me? ME! I've been so happy in this house with
MY family until YOU came along!!" Andy shrunk back in surprise. A single tear
dribbled down his cheek.

"I'm really sorry that all of this had to happen, Sam. I mean, I didn't know...."
He trailed off. Andy managed to smile at poor Sam.

" Let's try to be friends, OK? I'll find some way to get the people to notice you
more, alright?" Sam shrugged. He thought for a moment.

"OK." He looked down at his paws in enbarrassment. "Friends?" He asked.
Andy nodded. "Friends."
