"Gonta's Last Obstacle"

A
s I walk to the rice shop on the fourth night I look for lumps in the path leading to the front door. When I get to the path leading to the front door of the shop, I bend down and run my hand over the smooth, hard-packed dirt checking for any surprising obstacles that might await me.

Good. Nothing seems to be in the path tonight.

I whisper to myself, “I hope there are no animals inside.”

Tiptoeing down the path, I stop at the door and peek in the window, making sure there aren’t any animals inside. “I don’t see anything. I’ll go inside slowly and quietly and calmly,” I tell myself.

So I cautiously open the door and step inside. I decide to leave the door wide open so that just in case an animal jumps out at me I’ll be able to escape. I slide my foot across the smooth wood of the rice shop’s floor. My foot bumps into something. I bend down to take a closer look but it’s too dark to see so I feel the obstacle to determine its shape. It’s a large covered rectangle like a rice paper screen that’s been laid down on the floor.

I think I can make out its size by running my hands along its edge. Yes, that works! I can tell that I can walk around it to replace the stolen rice.

Stepping around the screen again I say to myself as I am walking out the door, “That was easier than I thought it would be. I’m glad I have only one more handful of rice to pay back.”

The End
