弟２人のおそうしきから、帰ってきたところです。みんな、とてもとてもかなしんでいました。パパとママは、まだないています。

パパとママは、ぼくとお兄ちゃんを家において、どこかに何かをしに、行ってしまいました。パパはただ、「川に近づいてはいけないよ」と、いっただけでした。

お兄さんは家の中に入っていきました。ぼくはガレージに行って、つりざおを取ってきました。それからアイスボックスにエサを探しに行きました。ミミズがいたらよかったのですが、あいにく一匹もいませんでした。そこで庭でほかの虫を探すことにしました。けれども庭にも一匹もいません。そこでまたアイスボックスのところへ行くと、ひとりごとをいいました。「シラミでもいいかな？」

それからぼくは、川に行きました。そしてつり糸をふかくたらしました。するととつぜん、大きな引きがありました。ぼくはグイグイ糸を引っぱりましたが、つれたのはタイヤでした。それからまた糸をたらすと、今度もタイヤがつれました。そこでぼくはタイヤをつなぐと、川の上にうかべました。

川の向こうがわにいたおとこの人が、それを見て、いいました「ヘイ！おもしろそうだな！」こうして、アップル川のいかだ流しが始まったのです。

came home from my two little brothers' funeral. Everyone was very, very sad. My mom and dad were still crying.

They dropped my big brother and I off at our house because they had to go somewhere or do something. The only thing that my dad said to us was, "Stay off the river kids."

My brother went into the house. I went into the garage and got my fishing rod and then I went into the ice box to get some bait. I wanted some night crawlers but we were out of them. So, I went to the garden to see if there were any worms in there. I couldn't find any worms. So I went back to the ice box and I said to myself, "I guess I can just use leaches."

So, I went down to the river. I set my line really deep and suddenly I got a huge tug on my line. I yanked it up and it was a tire. So, I took it off and threw my line back in. That kept happening to me so I sewed the tires together and they floated.

The man who lived across the river saw me floating the tires and said, "Hey that looks like a lot of fun." So that is how the tradition of floating down the Apple River started.
