ある朝、太陽がピカピカと輝いていました。

わたしは大好きなお母さんに「夜になると、みんなはどこに行くの？」と、聞きました。
お母さんは「心配しなくても大丈夫。明日になったら、ちゃんと分かるから」と、答えました。
そこでわたしはお父さんにも「太陽が沈んで、夜になったら、みんなはどこに行くの？」と、たずねました。
お父さんは「ぼくのかわいいおじょうちゃん。明日になったら、わかるんだよ」と、いいました。
わたしはもう１回、たずねてみることにしました。
お兄さんに「ねえ、パパが鼻から変な音を出してから、みんながどこに行くか知ってる？」と、聞いてみたのです。
お兄さんは「心配するなよ。みんなが行くところさ。それに変な音を出しているんじゃないよ。パパはイビキをかいているんだ」と、いいました。

その夜、わたしがベッドに入ると、小さな声が頭の中でつぶやき始めました。そのおかしな音は「ねえ！こっちに来て、遊びましょうよ！ここは夢の国。夜中、ダンスをして遊ぶのよ」と、ささやいています。わたしはそのまま、ねてしまいました。するとたくさんのお花や木、草原が見えました。そこへ突然、妖精が現われました。緑の服を着て、目が海のようにキラキラと光っています。妖精が「ぼくたちの国のこと、気に入った？とてもステキだろう？」と、いいました。わたしは「とてもきれいなながめだわ！」と、答えなければなりませんでした。すると妖精が「それじゃあ、いっしょに遊ぼううよ！」と、いいました。

そうしてわたしたちは、太陽の金色の帯がかすかに部屋の中を照らし出すまで、遊びつづけました。
目が覚めると、わたしは家の中にいました。
手にはオモチャのネズミをにぎっています。朝ご飯の後、わたしはパパとお兄さん、それから大好きなママを呼びました。そして「びっくりしないでね！わたし、夢の国へ行ったのよ！」と、いいました。
みんなはそれを聞いて、ただニッコリと笑いました。

his very morning, when the sun was shining bright,

I asked my loving mother: "Where do people go at night?"
She said to me "Don't worry, dear; tomorrow the answer will be crystal clear."
So I asked my father: "Daddy, where do people go at night when the sun gets low?"
And he answers me "My little girl, tomorrow you will know."
I decided to have just one more try.
I asked this elder brother of mine;"Hey, do you know where people go,
Once Daddy starts snorkelling through his nose?"
He answered "Don't you worry, it's where everyone goes,
And Dad's not snorkelling, he's snoring you know."
Then that very night, when I was in my bed,
A funny little voice started whispering in my head.
The voice said "Hey! Please come and play!
In the Land of Nod we'll dance the night away!"
So I went to sleep, and then I saw
Flowers and trees and meadows galore!
Suddenly a pixie appeared beside me
He was dressed all in green, his eyes sparkled like the sea.
He asked me "Do you like our land? I must say myself, it looks rather grand!"
I had to agree. Said I "It's a lovely sight to see!"
The pixie said "Then come and play with me!"
So we played and played till the sun's golden rays
Shone into my bedroom in a haze.
And when I awoke I was back at my house,
And in my hands I held my little toy mouse.
So then, after breakfast, I called my father,
My brother, and of course, my loving mother.
I told them "Guess what?! I've been to the Land of Nod!"
And all they could do was smile.
