あるとても晴れた日に動物の王様は、ジャングルがいつも同じでつまらないと思いました。そこで王様は、動物たちにもようを選ばせて、もっときれいな色にしようと考えつきました。動物ミーティングで、王様は動物たちに色の谷に来るよう、いいました。最初の動物はちょうちょでした。ちょうちょは両方の羽に同じもようを選びました。ちょうちょはとれもきれいになりました。次はシマウマでした。シマウマはストライプにすることにしました。動物たちは次々と谷に来て、もようを選びました。ところが一匹だけ、谷にこない動物がいました。ヒョウです。ヒョウは、岩の上にねころがって、ひなたぼっこをしていました。ヒョウはねころがりながら「動物の王様は一番良いもようをぼくのために取っておいてくれるだろう。あたりまえだよ。ぼくはジャングルで最高の動物だもの。だから一番ステキな柄が選べるのさ」と、思っていました。
次の日、ヒョウはゆっくりと色の谷へ向かいました。そこには動物の王様がいて、太陽の下でいねむりをしていました。ヒョウは王様を起こすと、いいました。
「ぼくのもようはどこ？一番良い柄を取っておいてくれたのでしょう？きれいな虹色なんてステキだな。そうしたらメスのヒョウたちは、全員ぼくにむちゅうになるぞ。それとも、、、」ヒョウはノロノロ歩きながら、いろいろ考えました。
「ヒョウ君、わるかったね。でも来るのがおそかったよ。もようはあとひとつしか、残っていないんだ。虹色のストライプじゃないよ。レインボーフィッシュがそれにしたんだ。これしかないんだよ」と、動物の王様はそういうと、シミだらけの柄を見せました。
「何だって？！ぼくにこのシミだらけのやつを着ろっていうの？？？？」、ヒョウはそういうと、もようを向こうにおしやりました。
「ごめんね。でもこれを着るしかないんだよ」と、動物の王様がいいました。
「よし、わかったよ。それを着るよ。でも笑うやつはゆるさないぞ」と、ヒョウは不平をいいました。
それからというもの、ヒョウはシミだらけの自分を考えて、ブツブツと文句をいうようになりました。だって長い長い間、シミの服を決してぬぐことができないのですから。ヒョウの体にシミがあるのは、こういうわけなのです。
ne bright and Sunny Day, the animal king decided that the jungle was WAY too plain and boring. So, he decided to let every animal choose a pattern to paint on itself to make it more colorful. So, at the Animal Meeting, he told the animals to come to the Color Cliff to choose a pattern.The first animal to come was Butterfly. She chose to have the same pattern on each wing. She looked very pretty. Next came Zebra, and he chose stripes. One by on, all the animals came to the cliff and chose a pattern, but one animal did not. Leopard was up on a rock, sunning himself. He thought," The Animal King will save the BEST one for me, that's for sure. I am the best animal in the jungle, so I will get the best."
The next day, Leopard slowly went up to Color Cliff. There was the Animal King, napping in the sun. Leopard woke him and said,
"Where's my pattern? I know you saved the best for ME. I think I will take a pretty rainbow stripe pattern; that will make ALL the lady leopards just come houding on me, or should I......." Leopard trailed of, lost in thought.
"I'm sorry, Leopard, but you came too late. I have just ONE pattern left, and it's not rainbow stripes. Rainbow Fish took that one. This is all I have left." said Animal King, showing Leopard the spots he had for Leopard to wear.
"THAT?!"shouted Leopard,"YOU EXPECT ME TO WEAR SPOTS??????" he pushed them away.
"I am sorry, but you'll just have to wear these." answered the Animal King.
"Oh, Alright, I'll wear them. But nobody better laugh, 'cause I HATE them." grumbled Leopard.
And from this day on, Leopard STILL growls when he thinks about the spots he had to put on and never takeoff so long, long age. And that's how the Leopard got his spots.
