レナは学校中で、一番かけ足の早いおんなの子です。いっしょうけんめい練習しなくても、ちょっと走るだけで、いつも一等賞がとれました。ところがレナの走るレースのトラックの下には、トラック・ファスターとよばれる変な生き物が住んでいました。トラック・ファスターはむらさき色をしたイジワルなモンスターで、たいていはトラックの近くかその下に住んでいます。このモンスターは人や物にすがたを変えることができるし、ちょっとしたまほうをつかうこともできます。トラック・ファスターはレナのことをじっと観察していて、ある日、小さなイタズラを思いつきました。まずはその用意です。空飛ぶスニーカーを作らなくっちゃ。
そこでトラック・ファスターは地面からひょいと顔を出して、真上にいるレナを見上げると、レナの足のサイズをはかりました。次に地下のお家にもどると、必要なものをかきあつめました。一番大変だったのは、くつの形を作ることです。あ！よいアイデアがある！レナの大切にしているスニーカーが体育館にあるぞ！トラック・ファスターはその夜、体育館へと出かけていきました。
それと同時に、トラック・ファスターは空飛ぶ薬を作り始めました。これはかんたん。材料は全部そろっています。トラック・ファスターは材料をおなべに入れると、火にかけて１５分間ぐつぐつとにこみました。それから１時間と４７分きっちり冷やしました。スニーカーをぬすみに学校に行く前に、じゅんびかんりょうです。体育館にだれもいないことをたしかめないと！トラック・ファスターはスニーカーをぬすむと、外へ出ようとしました。ところがそこには用務員さんがいて、ドアにかぎをかけようとしています。用務員さんは５つ先のドアにいます。トラック・ファスターは４つ先のドアのところです。用務員さんが、かぎを落としました。トラック・ファスターはすごいスピードで走り出して、ドアを通りぬけました。そのままお家に帰るまで、後ろもふりかえずに、ビュンビュンと走りました。
トラック・ファスターはお家に帰ると、ぬすんできたスニーカーに薬をたらしました。そしてぐっすりとねむってしまいました。明日もたくさんやらなきゃいけないことが、あるのです。トラック・ファスターはベッドに入ると、どうやったらイタズラの結果が見られるかしら、と考えました。そこで次の朝、早く起きると、トラック・ファスターはリナのクラスのだれかがお休みしていないかと、見に行きました。やった！リナの親友がお休みしているではありませんか！トラック・ファスターはさっそくリナの親友のマヤにすがたを変えると、４年生の列に並んで、リナの横に立ちました。リナがトラック・ファスターに話しかけました。「このくつったら、とてもきゅうくつなのよ。体育館から自分のスニーカーを取ってくるわ。いっしょに行く？」
「もちろんよ」と、マヤになりすましたトラック・ファスターは答えました。スニーカーは、まほうを使って、とっくに体育館にもどしてあったのです。体育館に行って、スニーカーを取ってくると、リナは洗面所でスニーカーにはき変えました。外に出ると、マヤが「空を飛べたらステキだと思わない？」と、いいました。「そうね！そうなったらいいわね」と、リナが答えました。するととつぜん、リナはふわりと空へうかび上がりました。まっすぐに上に行ったと思ったら、今度は左へ飛んで行きます。リナは旗のかかげてあるポールにぶつかりそうになって、あわてて、われに返りました。そしてあわててポールにつかまりました。学校の先生がそれを見つけて、さけびました。「飛びおりて！」「飛びおりる？じょうだんじゃないわ！しんじゃうじゃない！」「わかったわ。そのままでいるのよ」
何人もの先生があわててやってきました。先生たちは消防しょからはしごをかりてきました。リナはやっと地面におりることができましたが、こわさのあまりブルブルとふるえていました。リナと先生たちは教室にもどりました。けれどもリナは、マヤがニヤニヤとわらっていることに、気がつきませんでした。ラッキーなことに、リナたちは今週のはじめに飛行について習っていました。飛行＝飛ぶことです。もちろん飛行機で飛ぶことですけど、それでも役には立ちました。
その日、教室ではザップという読み方のゲームをしていました。リナの番が来て、読もうとすると、またイスから身体がふわりとうきました。リナはあわててイスにすわり直しましたが、身体はどんどんうかんでいきます。トラック・ファスターのマヤはその時、リナのスニーカーに白くてすけている小さな羽がはえているのことに気が付きました。トラック・ファスターはびっくり！この小さな羽のおかげで、使い方さえおぼえれば、リナは空飛ぶスニーカーを自由にあつかうことができるのです。
トラック・ファスターはあんまり頭にきたので、だんだんと元のすがたにもどってしまいました。そこでパチン、パチン、パチンと指を３回ならしました。するとむらさき色のくもとキラキラがあらわれて、トラック・ファスターのすがたはあっという間に消えてしまいました。今ではトラック・ファスターが学校のうらにある野原に住んでいます。ワハハハハハハ！
最後に、リナとマヤはそれからもずっとお友だちでいました。それにニューヨークまで飛んでいっておばさんに会ったりと、リナはスニーカーのおかげでとてもステキな思いをしています。トラック・ファスターのほうは地面の下にすわって、不幸せにくらしていました。トラック・ファスターはおこりながらも、もう２度と、人にイジワルをしないでおこうと、思うのでした。
ena was the fastest runner in her school. She didn't have to try very hard. She just ran and went fast. There was something called a track-faster that lived under the track where she ran races. A track-faster is a nasty purple monster that lives near or below tracks. It can take the shape of anything or anyone, and it can perform some simple magic. It had been watching Lena and decided it could give her a little mean gift. But first he had some work to do. He was going to make her a pair of flying sneakers.
You're probably thinking, "That would be so cool-- wearing sneakers that fly." But what if you wore them without knowing they could fly or that there was a special trick to make them fly.
The track-faster poked his head up and saw Lena right above him. He measured her foot and got her size. He went into his underground home to look for the stuff he needed. The hardest part would be making the shoe. But then he got an idea. He knew Lena had special running sneakers that she kept in the gym. He would go there that night.In the meantime he would start on the flying potion. It was simple; he had everything he needed. He put the ingredients in a pot, heated it up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, and left it for 15 minutes. Then he let it cool for an hour and 47 minutes before going into the school at night to get the sneakers. He had to be careful in case anyone was there. He got the sneakers and started out the door when he heard someone. It was the custodian locking the doors. The custodian was five doors away; then he was four doors away when he dropped his keys. The track-faster ran at top speed through the open door. He didn't stop running until he was back home.
He poured the liquid onto the sneakers. Then he settled in for a good sleep. He had a lot to do tomorrow.
He went to sleep thinking about what shape he should take to watch the results of his work. The next day he got up early and went to see if any of the kids in Lena's class were absent from school. Perfect! Her best friend wasn't there. He took the shape of Lena's best friend Maya and walked to the line of fourth graders by the side of the school. He stood in line next to Lena, and Lena said, "I don't know why I always have to wear these shoes. They're so uncomfortable. I'm going to go get my sneakers from the gym. Wanna come?"
"Sure," said the track-faster who was now Maya. The track-faster had already used a little magic to return Lena's sneakers to the gym. Maya and Lena went to the gym to get the sneakers. Lena went into the bathroom and changed into her sneakers.When they went back outside, Maya said, "Wouldn't it be cool to be able to fly?"
"Yeah. I guess it would," answered Lena. Then all of a sudden Lena began to rise into the air. She was going straight up and then to the left. When she crashed into the flagpole, she stopped thinking about flying and held onto the pole for her life.
One of the school's safety monitors saw her and yelled, "Jump!"
"Jump? Are you nuts? I'll kill myself!"
"Okay. I'll go get a teacher."They needed more than a teacher. They had to get a ladder from the Fire Department. When she got down she was still shaking from being scared. They went inside school, but Lena didn't notice Maya's evil grin. Luckily they had been learning about aviation earlier in the week: aviation as in FLYING. Well, flying in an airplane but that counts too.
During class that morning the class played a reading game called Zap. When it was Lena's turn to read, she started floating up from her seat. She quickly sat up straight, trying to remain in her seat. She kept floating up. Maya, the track-faster, noticed something on Lena's sneakers: There were little white translucent wings forming. The track-faster was truly surprised. The little wings would give Lena control of her flight the sneakers if she could figure out how they work.
The track-faster was so angry it began to slowly transform back to itself. He snapped his fingers three times and there was cloud of purple smoke and glitter and he was gone in a flash. Now he is living at the field behind the school. Bwa hahaha haaa!!
Well in the end, Lena and Maya remained best friends. Lena had a great time with her sneakers. She flew to New York City to visit her Aunt while the track-faster sat under the ground feeling angry and unhappy and trying not to bother anyone.
