"Tricks 'N Treats"
by
Katie

This is a short skit about 3 kids and a graveyard. I'm not going to get into stage terms, so if you want to act this play out, you can figure out where you want people to stand, etc.:

ACT I: It is getting dark outside and NATASHA is leaning against a gravestone. MIKE and TALIA are standing a little bit away from her. MIKE is holding a can of soda.

TALIA
Are you sure you want to go through with this. I mean, tonight of all nights. It's pretty absurd.

NATASHA
I'm positive. And it's not absurd to me. You just don't understand.

TALIA
I understand perfectly. We're in a graveyard, at night, on Halloween.

MIKE
I had to say Talia's making sense, but she is. It's crazy to be out here.

NATASHA
If it's so crazy, then why don't you leave.

MIKE
We are your friends.

TALIA
Yeah. It's our responsibility to make sure no zombies attack you.

MIKE
(sounding less confident about what he's saying as he's saying it) Uh yeah, but...it's not like, y'know, we believe in 'em or anything.

NATASHA
Of course not. They're only things written about by freaky writers like me.

TALIA
You're not a freaky writer.

NATASHA
Come on, Talia, I know your just saying that, and you know what? You don't need to. It doesn't bother me what you think of my work. It makes me happy, and that's all that matters to me. I don't really care if anyone else likes it.

MIKE
But we do like it.

TALIA
Yeah. It's really creepy. We hope you write lots more.

NATASHA
Sure.

TALIA
No, I'm serious.

NATASHA
Then why are you complaining about being here? Don't you know this is the only way to get over my writer's block?

TALIA
There's gotta be other ways.

NATASHA
Well there aren't. So just hang with me until I get an idea.

MIKE
How long'll that take?

NATASHA
I don't know.

There is a brief pause as the curtain closes, and we go to ACT II: we are in the living room of NATASHA's house with NATASHA'S MOM, MIKE'S MOM, TALIA'S DAD AND NATASHA'S DAD.
The room is small, and the front door is at the end of it. The door bell rings and NATASHA'S MOM goes to answer the ring.

TRICK-OR-TREATERS (offstage)
Trick or treat.

NATASHA'S MOM
Ooh, aren't you scary. Let's see, a ghost---

(She's interrupted by TRICK-OR-TREATER 1)

TRICK-OR-TREATER 1
I'm not a ghost. I'm supposed to be a bedsheet with holes cut in it.

NATASHA'S MOM
(surprised) Oh, isn't that...darling. And so creative too.
(to TRICK-OR-TREATER 2) And what are you supposed to be? A giant beach ball with an M on it?

TRICK-OR-TREATER 2
What's wrong with you lady? I'm supposed to be an M&M.

NATASHA'S MOM
(embarrased)Oh, um...traditional.

TRICK-OR-TREATER 2
More like old, cheap hand-me-down.

NATASHA'S MOM
Uh huh. Well (pulls candy from bowl)here's your candy.

NATASHA'S MOM shuts door, but the kids are talking so loudly, we can still here their last lines.

TRICK-OR-TREATER 1
I can't believe she thought you were a beach ball.

TRICK-OR-TREATER 2
I know. Look at the candy she gave us: M&Ms.

NATASHA'S MOM
(sits down, shaking head) Kids these days.

MIKE'S MOM
Tell me about them. Mike told me he'll be at the graveyard tonight with Talia and Natasha.

NATASHA'S MOM
What? Talia told me she was spending the night at the library doing research for her project.

MIKE'S MOM
Hmmm... well someone must be lying.

TALIA'S DAD
I don't think it was Mike.

NATASHA'S MOM
Are you implying that Natasha lied?

TALIA'S DAD
Maybe, maybe not. All I know is Talia used the same excuse, and I saw all her notes and research on the kitchen table.

NATASHA'S MOM
So maybe she forgot it, or didn't need it.

TALIA'S DAD
Well, I went down to the library to drop it off on my way over here, and she wasn't there.

NATASHA'S MOM
But surely Natasha--

TALIA'S DAD
I didn't see Natasha either, and I looked through the whole library.

NATASHA'S MOM
So you knew she was gone, but you came here anyway?

TALIA'S DAD
Kids are kids. I didn't think anything bad had happened to her. I remember being a kid. I know I didn't always tell the truth to my parents.

NATASHA'S MOM
So you were fine with her lie.

TALIA'S DAD
Not fine. Just understanding.

NATASHA'S DAD
Say, I've got an idea. You said they were at the cemetery, right Marigold?

MARIGOLD (MIKE'S MOM)
Yes.

NATASHA'S DAD
I tell you what, why don't we---

the curtain closes, and we go to
ACT III: The graveyard again. NATASHA, MIKE AND TALIA are pretty much in their same positions.

MIKE
Has inspiration struck yet?

NATASHA
Still working on it.

TALIA
Can't you work any faster? It's darker, and it's getting colder.

NATASHA
I'm trying, but inspiration has passed over me eighty million times. I'm cold too.

MIKE
If you're cold, then why can't we leave.

NATASHA
(hesitantly) We can, I guess.

TALIA
(tiredly happy) That's good news. I think my fingers are numb.

sfx:the rustle of tree branches.

TALIA
(alarmed) What was that?

MIKE
It was just a tree moving.

TALIA
But what made it move? There isn't any wind.

MIKE
(sounding a bit concerned) So...stop worrying, we're leaving any way.

TALIA
Yeah...but it's kinda creepy.

NATASHA
What are you two whining about now?

MIKE
There's something in the woods.

NATASHA
Yeah, I know. Bugs, trees, animals. Ther's someone in my house too, and I don't want that something to scold me when I get home late. Now come on. You've let the night get to you.

TALIA
We should be really careful, Natasha.

NATASHA
Okay, okay. Now follow me. I'll save you from your zombies.

MIKE
I hope you know what you're doing.

NATASHA
I think I do.

The three walk slowly and silently

sfx: wolf howling

MIKE
What was that?

NATASHA
It was a dog. Now come on.

Two lights click on in front of them. They look like giant animal eyes.

TALIA
(stuttering) H-How d-d'you exp-plain that M-Miss Know It All?

NATASHA
(frightened) I don't.

MIKE
Should we run?

FAMILIAR VOICE
No, you shouldn't.

NATASHA'S DAD (voice), NATASHA'S MOM, MIKE'S MOM AND TALIA'S DAD step out of the shadows.

NATASHA'S MOM
If you want a treat, you should expect a trick in return.
