"Anna's Promise"

Anna stared out the fogged up window of the attic. She watched as a young couple brought her Granpa's small car. Anna turned away, warm tears sliding down her face. Anna's granpa had died from a stroke two weeks ago, and her family was selling his belongings. Her granma had passed away when she was young. Anna clutched the shawl she had gotten from her grandparents on her second birthday. She wrapped it around herself and watched as the tan car drove away. Anna remembered riding in that car to the fair with Granpa and Anna's sister, Lila. Anna sighed and turned away. Her sister was away in college and hadn't even heard the news.

Her parents were grief-stricken and had stayed home from work. Anna spent most of her time in the attic looking at pictures of Granpa and Granma's wedding and when they were young. Holding the shawl tightly around her, Anna crept down the stairs and into her room.

The funeral had been last Thursday, but it still vividly flashed back in Anna's mind. Anna picked up a small photo of her sister and granma. A tear dropped on the photo and Anna tossed it on the bed.

"Why did you leave me?" she shouted into the empty room. "Why did you leave me?" she repeated and turned to find her mother looking at her.

Anna ran past her mother and back into the attic, where she fell asleep. When she awoke, Anna looked at the picture of the wedding and held to her heart.

"I promise to never forget you granma and granpa, I love you" she whispered and locked it in a trunk with other things. Anna grew up and to this day, she has never forgotten her grandparents.
