"Friends, Or Not Friends?"

HHurry up!" Christina shouted to her friend, Rachel, below.

"You gonna make me?" Rachel shouted back, sharper than she had wanted.

"Sure, if that's what you want!"

"Look, Chris, I was only kidding. So please stop taking life so seriously. Have a little fun in your life."

"And what makes you so perfect, Little Miss Snobby?" Christina murmered.

"Did I say anything about being perfect? Because I really don't think I did!" Rachel snapped, finishing her apple and then racing up the stairs to where her friend was standing. They both exchanged a look of annoyance, but then quickly started thinking back to when they were kids. Lots had changed since then, their friendship had been torn apart and they had to go through rough times. When they were kids they were the best of friends, but now it was more like enemies.

"Look, I didn't mean to annoy you, I want to be friends, you know! It's not like you do, you and your "perfect" gang!" Christina shot back at Rachel, after 30 seconds of despair.

"So what? Are you going to make me like you?"

"Well, maybe that is just what I should do!" Christina said, in between tears of sadness. Nothing was working out on their camping trip together, nothing at all.

"Look, I don't choose my friends. It just, well, it just happens!" Rachel explained, crouching to pick up a leaf to examine it. After a few seconds the leaf was torn apart, half in anger, the other half in confusion.

"Fine then, let's just get back to the campsite so I can see some decent human beings," Christina sobbed. The two then walked quietly to their campsite, not saying one single word. There was peace and quiet among the forest that day. People would of said it was beautiful, if it was not for Christina and Rachel.

The next day slowly came and went, and soon it was two days after they had talked. Well, of course they had said "hi," "goodnight," and "please pass the butter," but that was it. Finally Rachel spoke up.

"I know that we've been through an awful lot, but that's just the way it is, Chris. Look, can we at least talk? We're going to be here for 2 more days, you know."

"Don't call me Chris! What right do you have to call me that? What right?"

"You're right, I have no right at all, and I am sorry. Completely sorry. I still remember you telling me you want to be friends though, and I am taking you up on that offer," Rachel managed to spit out.

Christina looked up in confusion. "But you said you didn't pick your friends!"

"I know, Chris, but something's happening."

"Alright, so what am I supposed to say?" Christina finally managed to say, partly in joy, but partly in grief.

"Nothing right now, just think about it for awhile."

"Ok, I think I already know what I want."

"Friends?" Rachel stuck out her hand, motioning for Christina to shake it.

"Friends!" Christina beamed, and shook Rachel's hand as hard as she could. Even in the saddest stories, there are sometimes happy endings to sad beginnings.
