たいくつな科学の授業が終わって、ベルが鳴りました。子どもたちが教室からあふれるように、出ていきます。ろうかは、先週受けた算数の結果を待つ子どもたちでいっぱいでした。みんな、暗い顔をしています。ところがひとりだけ、ちがった表情をしている生徒がいました。 サラ・ラングレーは、ポスターがベタベタとはってあるかべにもたれて立っていました。ポスターには金曜日に行われるダンスのお知らせが書かれています。サラはポスターに全然注意をはらいませんでした。金曜日は勉強をする予定だし、夜には何もするつもりがなかったからです。サラはブロンドのかみをポニーテールにしています。テストの結果を聞くために、講堂に集まるようにとのアナウンスを聞いて、そのポニーテールが肩の上でゆれました。サラはこれまでの年と同じように、自分が一番だと分かっていました。そこでいつもの席にすわって、結果を聞きました。 「このテストで一番の成績を取ったのは、、、」長いちんもくがありました。 「マーク・クランベリーです。マーク、おめでとう」 サラはおどろいて、いすにすわっていました。これが初めて、サラがだれかに負けたしゅんかんでした。
ﾊ Sarah Langley was leaning against the wall which was decorated with posters advertising the school dance this Friday. Sarah took no notice of these posters as she was studying this Friday and was not doing anything that night. Her blonde pigtails were slung back over her shoulders as she heard the call to the assembly hall to announce the results of the test. Sarah knew she was going to win as she did every year. She sat down on her usual chair and listened. "The highest marks on this test were......." There was a long silence. " Mark Cramberry, Well done Mark. " Sarah sat there in amazement. the end of another extremely boring science lesson. Crowds of
children flooded out of the clasroom. The hall was full with
depressed children waiting for the results of their maths test
they took last week. There was one person that was not depressed
at all.
