"Blink:An X-Files Story"
by

P
rologue: Dr. Lucas Wilkins, an area 51 scientist, is experimenting with top-secret chemicals that were discovered over 60 years ago. These chemicals, when injected into the blood stream, allow the victim to have the ability to blink (move from one place to another in the blink of an eye.) at any time he wants. Unfortunately, this ability does not come easy. It causes side effects. After every two weeks, the victim must regenerate his or her power. In order to do this, he or she must drain the life energy out of others. Unless he or she does this, he will die a slow and painful death (skin decaying, brain liquefying, e.t.c.). You would think that no one would want to live this life and would kill him or her selves. Another down side is that the chemicals take over the victim's brain. Only partially though, the victims do have consciousness of what they are doing, but only after they do it.

CHAPTER I
Dr. Wilkins, his wife, and their daughter were walking home from the theater in a private park, about º of a mile away from their home. It was 8:08 p.m., it was dark and the park was empty except for the three.

"So, did you like that play Kim?" Mrs. Wilkins asked.
"Yeah, it was really good."
"Well, glad you liked it." Mr. Wilkins replied.
They hear a gunshot. The bullet barely misses Dr. Wilkins's head. Kim screams loudly as she hears the bullet whiz right past her ear.
"Oh my God", Mrs. Wilkins yells, "Are you all right Lucas?"
"I think so, (checking his body for injuries) yeah I'm fine", Dr. Wilkins managed to say. The shooter was gone in a matter of seconds.

The Police searched for a weapon or footprints or some trace that there was a shooter to begin with. They found nothing. Nothing at all pointed out to them that there even ever was a shooter.
They questioned the family about it. Maybe they were making it up. Maybe they were just imagining it. None of the polices suggestions seemed to fit. It all just didn't make sense.

CHAPTER II
Mulder is sitting in his office looking through a file. Scully walks into the office with the same disposition that she has every day. She is ready to listen to all of Mulder's ridiculous suspicions and strange cases.

"Well Mulder, I just gave my field report in. Skinner said that if we don't have a case ready to go, we can have the next two days off."
"Mulder?"
"Hmm? Oh yeah, well I have something I want to work on, but you can leave if you want."
"Mulder, what do you want to work on?"
"In Arizona, a family of three gets shot at in a park. There is no sign of any shooter at all."
"Mulder, pardon my saying so but, this doesn't sound like a case you'd be interested in."
"Some local people are saying it might be a ghost."

Scully opens her eyes wide and raises one eyebrow. She is about to say something but realizes that nothing she is going to say is going to change Mulder's mind.

"I'm going over there. I'll be back in less than two days."
"Mulder, I really don't think anything warrants a ghost. I don't even think you should waste your time investigating it."
"Well Scully, we have two days of vacation and you can take time visiting family or going down the shore, I like doing things like this (holds up the file) in my free time."
"Well, I think I'm going to go with you. I mean, if I don't you'll wind up staying there forever."

Mulder and Scully get the next flight over to Arizona and they investigate the site, which had been closed off to the public. They, as Scully suspected, found nothing to point out paranormal activity.
They decided to go right to the source and questioned the Wilkins family about any enemies or anyone who held a grudge. The family could not think of anyone who would try to hurt them.

"Well, Dr. Wilkins, do you know of anyone who knew you were going to the theater that night?" Mulder asked.

He knew, despite Scully's constant protests that something was going on, something big. Why else would someone slip him the case.

"Um, no, I only told some friends... from work." He scratched his balding head and took of his glasses to rub the bridge of his nose.
"Dr. Wilkins, what did you do this week?" Scully asked.
"I went to work, I played some golf with a few friends, that's about it."
"What time do you usually get home from work?" Mulder asked.
"Well, about eight-thirty, nine o'clock, but that night I'd gotten out a early to go to the theatre. We had third row, orchestra.

"Thank you", Scully said.

The agents leave the house. They sit in the car for a while until Mulder finally breaks the silence.

"What does Dr. Wilkins do for a living?"
"He's aÖ(looking at his file) classified." Scully answered almost questionably.
"What is that supposed to mean?" Mulder shouted anxiously.
"Well, He must be an agent of some sort."
"Well that explains it all."
"What are you talking about, what explains it all?" Scully asked. She was starting to get a little impatient.
"Well, just hear me out." When Scully heard this she knew he was headed for another one of his crazy theories.
"What if Wilkins is working with something that the shooter would like to get his hands on?"
"MulÖ"
"Wait a sec, Wilkins' job is classified, he won't talk about his personal life, and then someone shoots at him. It all fits together!"
"Nothing fits together Mulder, we still don't know who the shooter is! And I don't blame him for not wanting to talk to us. Would you want to?"
"No, not if I had something to hide."

This brings the pair into more silence, finally Mulder starts the car and they drive off. About 20 min. later they are coming into the state's capital city and Scully is curious.

"Mulder?"
"I'm gonna stakeout Wilkins's house."
"And what am I supposed to do", asked Scully waiting for him to say something crazy and ridiculous.
"YouÖ are going to be doing something really fun." Mulder answered.

CHAPTER III
Fifteen min. later Scully was standing in front of the state's Hall of Records, she was going to try to look for something more about Dr. Wilkins.
"Oh yeah, real fun." Scully mumbled.
Meanwhile, Mulder was sitting in his car across the street from the Wilkins's house. He was waiting for something to happen. He was hoping that Dr. Wilkins would leave the house hopefully going to wherever he worked. Two hours later, Mulder got his wish. Dr. Wilkins walked out of the house and got into his black, Dodge Neon. He pulled out of the driveway and down the street, unaware that Mulder was following him.
As Mulder cracked a sunflower seed into his mouth he thought about what Dr. Wilkins could be involved with. The first, and only, thought that came to his mind was and alien cover-up. He must be involved with something of that sort.
Back in the Hall of Records, Scully was busily going through files and files of different people in various places in the town.
All she had found out about Dr. Lucas Wilkins, were his name, age, and birthplace, but those were all the things that were on his birth certificate. She looked at her watch. She had been there for almost three hours.
Meanwhile Mulder was still tailing Dr. Wilkins. He'd been doing so for almost a half-hour and Dr. Wilkins did not seem to be ready to stop anytime soon. Mulder took his cell phone out of his jacket pocket on the passenger's seat and punched in some numbers.
Scully's cell phone rang. It startled her since she had been in the silence of the building for so long. She answered her phone, "Scully."

"Hey Scully, did you dig up any dirt on Wilkins." Mulder was on the other end of the line.
"No MulderÖ I didn't; of course I did find a few mysterious deaths in the town, missing person cases, there's even a report of a UFO here, butÖ"
"UFO? Oh sorry, you sure there's nothing on him?"
"I'm pretty sure. I would say Dr. Wilkins is squeaky clean."
There was a pause on the other end of the line. "MulderÖMulder?"
"Scully, I wouldn't say squeaky clean."
"What." Scully was baffled.
"Wilkins is an Area 51 agent."
"Mulder, I know you are frustrated that you can't find a lead butÖ"
"No Scully, I'm serious. I followed him and he's pulling into the gates. He's going through, he'sÖ he's in.
"Mulder you better not be thinking of going in there I know you've snuck on to government property before but this just..."
"Oh I was thinking it, but I can't. They're too well guarded. Even if I got through the gates I would never get into the building. I gotta go, I'll be there in about half an hour."

Scully put down the phone. She was beginning to become more irritated then she was before, but a little less baffled. If Dr. Wilkins were a special agent then someone would have had a motive to shoot at him.

CHAPTER IV
Two hours later, Mulder and Scully were on their way to the Wilkins house. They, well actually Mulder, figured that they'd better interrogate Mrs. Wilkins again because they might get more answers out of her without her husband around.

"I think that the woman has told us everything she knows."
"No Scully, I think she seems to be a bit paranoid about something."
"Mulder, you're 'a bit paranoid' all the time, that doesn't mean you are always hiding something. Besides, her husband was shot at, she has a right to be nervous."

The two decided to wait a while before stopping at the home. They went to a small diner about 10 miles away for dinner. At around seven-thirty, they walked out of the diner and drove over to the house.
They knocked on the door. Kim Wilkins, the Wilkins's fourteen-year-old daughter, answered the door.

"Hi Kim, can we please speak to your mother?" Scully asked.
"UmÖ yeah, hold on." Kim answered.
Kim disappeared behind the door in search of her mother. Mrs. Wilkins walked over to the doorway.
"Did you find the guy who shot at Lucas?" She asked nervously.
"Uh, no I'm sorry we didn't."
"Oh, well, if you want to ask Lucas some more questions, he won't be home for a while."
"We were actually wondering if we could ask you some questions." Mulder said.
"We already told you everything we know. I don't think I would be able to tell you anything more. I would appreciate it if you would please leave us alone." She said.

She shut the door, leaving the two agents standing on the porch.

"That went well." Mulder said calmly.

For two and hours the agents investigated the scene of the crime again, they asked neighbors and friends about anything that they might have known. They got no information or anything that could help.

"Mulder, I think we should let the local P.D. handle this. There really doesn't seem to be any reason for the bureau to be called over here to investigate." Scully said.
"Scully there is something strange going on here, why else would someone want us to take the time to figure it out?" Mulder questioned.
"Mulder I don't think it is us that they wanted down here, it's you."
"What?"
"You know that they are sending you on a wild goose chase.

TheÖ" BRING BRING. Mulder's cell-phone rang noisily.

"Mulder. What!? When? OhÖ uh-huhÖOK, we'll be right there."
"What?"
"It seems that Kim Wilkins was kidnapped out of her home two hours ago."

CHAPTER V
Mulder and Scully drove once again over to the house. It was swarmed with police, investigators, and reporters. They pushed their way through the crowd.

"Who's the officer in charge?" Scully asked.
"Lt. Burrows, he's over there."
"Sir?"
"Yes?"
"I'm Agent Dana Scully, this is Agent Mulder, we're with the Federal Bureau of Investigation we were here to investigate the shooting. Where were the agents assigned to watch the house?"
"They were sitting out front here and in the backyard, they didn't here or see anyone go in until they saw the light in the girl's room go off."
"Well, then how did the kidnapper get in?" Mulder asked.
"To tell you the truth, we really don't know. Our theory though, is that the abductor turned off the electricity from the electric meter on the side of the house and went in through the window on the same side."
"But how would that make sense if the agents were sitting here the whole time watching the house and Mrs. Wilkins was sitting in the living room."
"As I said, It's just a theory." (Someone calls Lt. Burrows from the back of the house.) "Excuse me." He says.

Both Agents walked into the house. It looked much different than it had before. It looked darker and gloomier. As they walked in, they saw camera flashes going off, people dusting for fingerprints and looking for evidence.

Mulder bent down and whispered in Scully's ear, "They're not going to find anything." He walked away, asked an agent something, and headed for the stairs. Scully started to follow him and then saw something that stopped her. Near the stairway, there was a small space between the staircase and the wall. Something was shining in between it. Scully took a tissue out of her pocket. She bent down and picked up the object. She brought it closer to her and saw what it was: a hypodermic partially filled with a greenish liquid.
Mulder was standing in Kim's bedroom. He was examining the huge pile of stuffed animals that was in a corner of her room.

"Mulder." Scully came in the room carrying a small plastic bag, probably filled with evidence.
"Yeah?"
"I found this (she holds up the bag, containing a small hypodermic) between the staircase and the fireplace. Our kidnapper probably had it in his pocket and it fell out as he was going up the stairs to get the girl. It's filled with some type of liquid, I've never seen it before."
"No Scully, I don't think so. I think it looks to important for him to just drop it somewhere."
"Mulder, Are you suggesting that he purposely left it there? Why would he do that?"
"I don't know. I'm not saying that he purposely left it there for us to find it, but I do think that he knows it's missing."
"So what you're saying is that he's going to be coming back and when he doesÖ"
"We'll be waiting."

In a large, dark warehouse sat Steven Johnson. His long black hair wet from the rain outside. A few yards away from him, Kim sat tied up in a chair, squirming to get loose.
"Don't waste your time", Steven said, "I will revenge what your father did to me, you can be sure of that."

CHAPTER VI
Outside the Wilkins's house, Scully and Mulder sat in the dark car waiting for their kidnapper to show up. Scully had her head rested back on the seat and was sleeping quietly. Mulder, on the other hand, was restlessly looking from the house to Dr. Wilkins's file. He was beginning to doubt his theory of the kidnapper coming back. He had forbid Scully of going to the lab to analyze the substance that they found. He was convinced that when the prowler came back, they would catch him and find out what was in the vial.
They hadn't told the cops what they had found even though it was tampering with evidence. Mulder knew that the police would not be able to do anything that the pair of agents hadn't already done.

"Scully?"
"WhaÖhuh, oh, I must have dozed off. Anything?"
"No, I don't think we are gonna have anything anytime soon."
"What? You said that the guy would be coming back here."
"I know what I said, I don't think I'm right about it though. If he hasn't shown up by now, I don't think he will be. You should go to the lab and check out that evidence. I think I'm gonna take a crack at something."

Mulder pulled the car in front of the building where Scully was doing the analysis of the strange green chemical. He was talking on the phone.

"OKÖ thanks guys yeah, OkÖno I think I'll skip." He pressed the small button on the phone, put it in his pocket, and stepped out of he car. He began to walk up the stairs of the building. He was desperate to know what Scully had come up with.
He walked into a room and saw the red-haired agent standing with a folder in her hand. "Mulder. I ran some tests and I have to say that I've never seen anything like it before. I don't know how to explain it in terms of science. All I can say is that you were right."
"About what?"
"There is definitely something strange going on here."
Mulder and Scully stood in front of a desolate building. It had what seemed to be four stories.
"Mulder, what are we doing here?"
"Scully, I talked with Frohike, Byers, and Langly. They did some digging and found out that this is where Steven Johnson and nineteen other people were injected with that chemical in 1983. Dr. Wilkins was one of the scientists assigned to that project. You analyzed the liquid yourself and said you'd never seen anything like it. It must change the person into, I don't knowÖ something. All I know is that if the shooter wanted revenge then this is probably where he would go."
"OK, fine, I'll take the back of the building and you start up front, it will be easier to find them if we're separated."
"OKÖ oh, Scully?"
"Yeah?"
"Be careful, we don't know what this guy is capable of."

Scully nods her head and then quickly trots to the back of the building. Mulder tries the front entrance. Locked, all the lights are shut off in the building. He decides that he should be able to break down the door considering it is not incredibly sturdy.
Mulder bursts through the door and shines his flashlight around. He hears a scream from somewhere else in the building, he runs towards the sound.
"Please Mr., please! NO!" Another scream of fright sounded. This time, Mulder knew which direction it was coming from.
He ran closer to the noise. He saw a doorway with a little bit of light shining in the room. He stood poised ready to shoot.
He stepped in front of the doorway and aimed his gun.

"FREEZE!"

In the room was Steven Johnson about to inject the chemical into Kim's arm. Kim sat crying helplessly in the chair.

"Steven, drop it!" Mulder ordered.
"I'm seeking revenge, her father did the same thing to me and I intend to settle the score."
"By doing what, giving her this disease? What good is that going to do?"
"If her father was heartless enough to do this too me then I think he deserves this."
"What does it do Steven. Is that how you got in and out of the house without being noticed?"
"I'm settling the score."

He held the needle up to Kim's arm. Mulder fired and shot Steven right in the shoulder. Kim screamed. Scully ran into the room. She looked at Steven on the floor and looked at Kim. She picked up her phone and dialed.

"This is Agent Dana Scully of the FBI, ID number 2317-616. I've got a man down atÖ" Mulder ran over to Kim.
"Are you OK?" he asked as he untied the rope.
Kim nodded her head. As the rope fell to the floor, she slowly stood up.
"Oww!"
Mulder caught her as she fell. "Are you OK? What's the matter?"
"Ow, owÖ my, ankle."
"Scully?"
"Huh?"
"Something's wrong with her ankle."
Scully bent down and took a look at it. "Well, you'll have to get an X-ray, but I don't think it's too serious. Just a minor sprain. Your going to be OK. Everything will be OK.

Chapter VII
It was a sunny Tuesday morning, not the perfect weather for the day's occasion. Scully was standing outside in the Wilkins's backyard along with about twenty other people, all with proper clearance.
She and Mulder had gotten Kim back with her family and put Steven Johnson under arrest. He was in the hospital for now but when he got out, he would be spending 25 years to life in prison. The authorities weren't able to find out what the chemical was but as it turns out, the amount of blood loss Steven suffered from threw off the balance of the chemical in his body and he did not have his ability to "blink" anymore.
Mulder walked towards Scully from the group of different agents and police officers with an expressionless face.

"Mulder, when are they taking Dr. Wilkins into custody? I want to ask him a few questions before he goes."
"Well, I don't think you are going to get your questions answered very soon."
"Why not?"
"They aren't taking him in. He is protected by his 'company', he has the right to refuse to answer any questions and the police and/or FBI are not allowed to put him under arrest."
"But what he did to those twenty peopleÖ"
"They are claiming it was a freak accident with an experimental chemical. They are trying to track down the test subjects now, but they are all over the world and they have most likely changed their names through some type of witness protection program. They will probably never be found."
"Mulder, you're going to except this?"
"What else can I do. I'll be in the car."

He walked slowly away and sat down in the car parked in front of the house.
Scully sighed. She couldn't believe that he was giving up like this. It just wasn't like him.
She glanced over at the porch, where Dr. Wilkins had been standing. She saw him standing behind a small shrub that had smoke coming from it. But, as she took a closer look, she saw that it wasn't the shrub that had smoke coming from it, but the person standing behind it.

In the shadow of the bush, stood that shadowy man, the man who Mulder had hated for years, the man that hid in the shadows and tried to ruin Mulder's career. The Cigarette Smoking Man stood there, with a cigarette in his mouth, shaking Dr. Wilkin's hand.
