"How Could I Have Said That?"

H
ow could I have said that? Me, the person who everybody says is fearless and kind. I guess I better start from the beginning.

I was at my locker reaching for my math book. I felt a tap on my shoulder and cautiously turned around. There he was. What did he want? I opened my mouth to say something, but what should I say? "Hi..." was all I could manage. I turned to get my folders. Then he started to speak. I thought he was talking to somebody else, but the hallway was empty. He was talking to me! In order to not look too interested, I kept looking for my English book. You know how my locker is and it kinda...well, um...fell out. I was ready to catch it, really I was! Suddenly, it wasn't there!?! I looked up and saw two hands putting my English book away. I was so surprised I started to cough. He looked down and I was startled when he said, "Are you okay?" Then he took my empty water bottle out of my locker and went to the fountain. When he came back he said, "Here, drink this." Between sips I mumbled a "Thanks." I had said it so quietly that I thought nobody could hear me. He must have heard me because he said, "You're welcome." I finished the water and put the bottle back in my locker and stood up, ready to go. I thought to myself, "Ask him!" So I asked, "Why...did you...come here?"

"Well, you know, just to talk. None of my friends are here."

"Well, see ya!" I said, and started to walk towards the stairs.

"Wait!" he shouted. I turned around and walked back to where I had been standing. He started to say something. "Well, I was...um...I was...ah...wondering if you wanted to go out with me."

With all the courage I had I said the only word that was needed, "Yeah... Sure... Fine... I'd love to." As I walked down the stairs with him, I thought to myself, "I didn't think I had that much courage! How could I have said that? I mean, all by myself?"
