elp me! yelled Helen McDunlape. Mama! Where are you? yelled Helen.
Helen was a baby bird who had lost her mom. She had fallen out of a tree when her mother was out looking for worms. She was walking along and she saw a beautiful house. It was owned by a very rich family. The house wasnt that big, but it was to the baby bird.
Hmmm. Maybe my mother is in there. she said.
She waited until dark and then she climbed up the chimney. (She cant fly yet but she is a very good climber.) She reached the top. There were two windows up there. The baby bird looked in the first one. There were two humans sleeping in a bed. She looked in the second one. There was a little baby in a cradle. The baby looked so cute, the baby bird thought. She decided to go in with the baby.
She started pecking at the window. Ha ha ha! the baby giggled.
The baby was awake! The bird kept pecking. Soon she broke the window and went inside. She jumped up to the babys bed and snuggled up on his pillow.
_______________________2_________________________________ The next morning, the mother bird was looking everywhere for her baby. She put posters up everywhere in Bird City. She prayed that he was in Bird City and not in the human world. She decided that the human world was too far away and that her poor baby was in Bird Town somewhere. She did not know that her baby had traveled to the human world and had made friends with a human.
The mother called everyone she knew but no one knew where her baby was. Then she remembered that she hadnt called her best friend, Tracy Kline. She called her.
Hello, is this Tracy Kline? she asked.
Yes this is, said Tracy.
This is Cindy McDunlape, and my son is missing. Have you seen him? asked Cindy.
As a matter of fact, I did see a little birdie heading to the human world, said Tracy.
Oh thank-you! yelled Cindy.
She hung up the phone before Tracy could answer and ran out the door.
_______________________3_________________________________ Helen, the baby bird, was still asleep on the babys pillow.
Waaaaaaaa! cried the baby.
It woke Helen up. Helen pecked the babys head. The baby stopped. He liked it. Soon they were the best of friends. Every morning the bird would peck the babys head.
One day the bird was exploring the house. He went in to the mom and dads room. There was a giant dresser, a giant bookcase, a giant bed, and two pairs of giant feet! Helen climbed up the dresser. There was a wallet and a picture of a bird.
Mommy! she yelled.
The bird did not answer back. It wasnt her mom. Then she looked at the wallet. There was a big piece of paper that said: $600.00. She took it and went away.
___________________________4_____________________________ Vrrooooooooom, Vrrooooooooom, went the car. Cindy, the mommy bird, jumped in and took off. Cruising down the highway, with the radio blasting, she headed to the human world. The car next to her kept sliding all over the road.
Crazy Driver! You are spposed to stay on the right side! yelled Cindy.
Beep! Beeeeeeeeeeep! Bang! Chirp! Help! yelled somebody.
Everything went black.
__________________________5______________________________ The bird gave the bill to the baby and the baby ate it. The parents were fighting in the other room because every night when they went to sleep something broke window and came in. Then it would go and steal their money. The last time $600.00 was stolen from their money. The bird heard them yelling their heads off.
Why do you have to leave it on the dresser where everybody can find it? yelled the mom.
I dont know! You were the one that told me to! yelled the dad.
I did not!! Why dont you do something right for a change? yelled the mom.
Like what would you suggest Miss Know It All? yelled the dad.
Just get out. Go find who did this! yelled the mom.
Oh fine. Ill just pack up the car and go! yelled the dad.
So will I! yelled the mom.
The birdie stayed up. Then a few hours later, he heard the door slam and a car drive off.
_____________________________6___________________________ Lots of doctor birds sat around Cindy.
Whats wrong with her? asked a doctor bird.
We think shes dead, said a doctor.
Did she have any family? asked a doctor.
Her husband died and no one knows where her son is, said a doctor.
Thats very sad, said a doctor. She died in a car wreck. The other bird was drinking beer.
Suddenly, the mom bird opened her eyes! Where is my baby? she asked.
Wahoo! She is alive! the doctors yelled.
__________________________7______________________________ Oh no! What will I do? Where shall I go? The babys parents just left! yelled Helen, the baby bird. I think I can fly. I think I can fly! I can fly! said the bird.
He grabbed the baby with his beak and flew outside. The baby woke up. He started crying.
Its all right. Dont cry. Were going to get your parents! said Helen.
Helen watched the cars. They were going fast. One had the mom in it, and one had the dad in it. They were both going the same way. Helen could hear them yelling out their windows. The mom was driving in a convertible.
Go baby! Hold on, and dont let your mom see you. Helen said to the baby. Oh yes, I have to give you this. Heres a portable phone so you can call me up sometime. When you pick up the phone, it automatically calls me. Bye bye Baby! yelled Helen.
Then he dropped the baby, and he landed in his moms car! Helen went after the dads car, while the baby was in his moms car.
_______________________________8_________________________ Oh my poor baby. I miss him so much, said the mom bird, who was now at her home.
But the only thing was---she hurt her leg in the crash and she was in a wheelchair. The doctors told her she would probably be in it for life. She started crying.
______________________________9__________________________ Helen flew as fast as she could. She was almost ready to give up. But then, another bird came along.
Hello. My name is Perrdy, she said.
My name is Helen said Helen. Sorry, Ive gotta go. said Helen.
Helen flew faster and faster toward the car. Finally she reached it. She started to fly around the dads car window.
Dad stopped. What do you want? said dad.
The bird handed him a $1000.00 bill. (He had been secretly keeping it in his mouth trying to find just the right place to use it.)
Oh my! Ive got to get back to my wife! Come on, birdie! dad yelled.
Dad sped off, going 85 miles a hour. Helen showed him where to go. They saw Moms car parked in an old parking lot. Next to the parking lot was an old motel. There was a sign that said: Harrys Super Only-Costs-1 cent Motel!
Dad and Helen ran into the motel.
Hello. Has anybody checked in with the last name Kantea? asked the dad.
Yes. I think she went upstairs. said the motel keeper.
Helen and dad ran to the elevator. Dad pushed number two. Then he thought it was number three. Or maybe it was number four. Or number five? Or was it six? Dad started to get mad. He started punching the buttons. Finally he decided on three. They started to go up. Then they stopped.
Whats wrong with this thing? Its supposed to open! yelled dad. What is wrong with the thing? dad yelled.
Ill fix that, tweeted Helen.
Helen pecked the door. It opened. Dad ran into the first room he saw. He saw moms car drive off! She must have gone down the stairs while they were stuck in the elevator!
Helen heard a big bang. Dad was so excited and wanted to get his wife so badly, that he jumped out the window!
Ahhhhhhhhhh! I wont let her go! yelled dad as he jumped out the window.
Is he crazy? Were on the third floor! yelled Helen.
Wow! Im flying! said dad.
It was Perrdy, the other bird! Perrdy had caught him! They finally got to moms car. Dad showed her the $1000.00 and they lived happily ever after.
But that is not the end of this story. Helen still had to find her mom.

Helen looked everywhere. Where was her mom? She bumped into a big sign while she was walking. It said: Welcome to Bird City! She thought for a moment. She thought that she remembered a place called Bird City.
I feel very funny, like I have been here before, a very long time ago, said Helen.
As she walked, she saw a very old tree. Up in it was a nest. In the nest was an old bird. By the nest was a sign that said: The McDunlapes. Suddenly she remembered! That old bird was her mom!
Mommy! Im back! yelled Helen.
Helen is that you? Oh, I thought you had gotten birdnapped or something like that! Im so glad to see you, yelled mom.
She came over in her wheelchair and hugged Helen. Suddenly, mom fell off the branch! They were very high up!
Ive gotta save her! yelled Helen.
She flew down, grabbed her mommy, and flew her up to their house.
That was close. Thanks for saving me honey, said mom.
You are welcome. Oh yes, I made some new friends and I would like you to meet them. Theyre not here right now but I have this phone and...
What is a phone? Helens mother interrupted.
Well, it is a very handy thing. You have to push some buttons, and you can talk to your friends. I have a friend who I call baby. His phone number is 956-2223. Try it! said Helen.
Okay, said mom.
She dialed the number.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! said baby.
Wow! Is that baby? asked mom.
Yes, said Helen.
And they lived happily ever after.
