ago,nobody lived on the islands of new zeland.then the Maori
people came from polynesia and made their homes north island.the
maoris travelled across the pacific ocean in canoes.when the
maoris reached north island.they were very hungry,so they went
hunting.one of them found a kiwi bird.it was such a strange creature,the
maori wasn't sure if he and the others could eat it "are
you a bird?"he asked"if you are ,where are your wings,i
cannot possibbly eat a bird without wings"now it so happens
that kiwis have,but they cannot use them to fly because they
are very small.but the kiwi was clever,he did not want to be
eaten "of course i dont have wings"he said.instead
the kiwi pointed to a bush of fruit which is now called the kiwi
fruit. |
