A Brief History
Kids' Space was launched in March of 1995 as a personal home page at Interport Communications. The first participants were from the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, and Hong Kong. Later that year, Japanese pages were created by readers from Japan.
In 1996, the site was separated into three main sections including one for creative activities, another for communication, and a section for learning basic computer skills. Hop Pop Town was added for InternetExpo 96.
The next year these three sections were split into two sites along with a help Section:
- International Kids' Space for creative activities;
- Kids' Space Connection for communication activities, such as penpals;
- and the Guide Bear's Tour as a tool for using both sites and teaching about technology.
Both sites generated a worldwide following with readers from 163 countries and a have received over a million hits. They have also received prominent industry awards and have been recognized in various media, including books, magazines, CD-ROM products, and TV and radio programs.
As Kids' Space continues to expand, maintaining the public spirit of the sites with a concern for safety has been our main concern. Since Kids' Space is used in many classrooms, it is important that our sites remain commercial-free.
In July of 2000, Kids' Space became an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We welcome contributions to Kids' Space Foundation to support the artistic collaboration of international children on-line.
With Help from our contributors, we have suceeded to re-program Kids' Space Connection in 2002, a safer communication environment for children, with developing the sophisticated evaluation system, a messaging system for children, and more emai report to parents.
We hope that Kids' Space will continue to grow and flourish as an Internet site where children world wide explore and communicate using new technology.
