"The Monkey Hangers"
by
Lauren England

And this is why... During the Napolionic wars between England and France, a french ship was recked on the shores of Harlepool's rocky coast. All the crew were drowned except for one little monkey who was the ship's mascot dressed in a french sailors uniform.

And the people of Hartlepool were so ignorant that they thought the monkeys chatter was french. The poor monkey could not understand the people of Hartlepool because they were talking in English so they hung him as a french spy.

All over England we are known as the "Monkey Hangers."

Our football team has a monkey for their mascot because of this tale. Their is a car wash in Hartlepool and they have built a little gallow and they have put a fake monkey on it. So the monkey looks like it has been hung.
