- フィンガスおじいさんは何でも知っていてかしこく、サケをつるために毎日つりをしていました。 ある日そこへフィオン少年がサケつりを教えてもらうように使いに出されました。 フィオンが１２歳のとき、フィンガスおじいさんはとうとうサケをつることに成功し、フィオンに料理するように言いました。 でもぜったいに味見をしないようにって言いつけました。 サケを焼いていると、わきに火ぶくれができてきたので、フィオンは熱くなっているのも忘れて、それをおや指でつぶそうとしました。 やけどをしてしまったフィオンは、とっさにその指を口にくわえて冷ましました。 そしてフィオンは初めてサケを味見したかしこい人になりました。 フィンガスおじいさんはフィオンを許しましたが、帰り道では教えることがなくなってしまいましたとさ。
- Once there was a salmon who lived in the river Boyne. The first person to taste it would become wise above all others. An old man called Finn駟geas who was well educated and clever fished for the salmon every day of his life. One day a young boy named Fionn was sent to be taught all that Finn駟geas knew. When Fionn was twelve, Finn駟geas finally caught the salmon and told Fionn to cook it but not to taste it. A blister rose on the side of the salmon and Fionn put thumb on it to break the blister forgetting the salmon was hot. He burnt his thumb and put it in his mouth to cool it. So he was the first to taste the salmon! Finn駟geas forgave him and sent him on his way for he could be taught nothing else.
