"The Salmon of Knowledge"
by
Clare Ireland
Once there was a salmon who lived in the river Boyne. The first person to taste it would become wise above all others. An old man called Finnéigeas who was well educated and clever fished for the salmon every day of his life. One day a young boy named Fionn was sent to be taught all that Finnéigeas knew. When Fionn was twelve, Finnéigeas finally caught the salmon and told Fionn to cook it but not to taste it. A blister rose on the side of the salmon and Fionn put thumb on it to break the blister forgetting the salmon was hot. He burnt his thumb and put it in his mouth to cool it. So he was the first to taste the salmon! Finnéigeas forgave him and sent him on his way for he could be taught nothing else.
