by
Autumn Ireland
Long ago there was a king called Lir and his queen. They loved eachother very much. They had four children too. One day the poor queen became ill and died. All of her children and her husband were very sad. Lir thought that he should marry again so that the children would not be lonely. He married the queen's sister Aoife. Aofie was a very pretty girl. Even though the children had Aoife as their mother they missed the lulabyes sung to them at night by their mother. Aoife hated the children though. Even though Aoife was pretty she was actually a wicked witch. She loved Lir for his riches and wanted him all for herself. One day Aoife took the children to a lake. There she turned them all into swans. 'You will live on this lake for 100 years'' said Aoife. 'You will live another 100 years at sea'' she told them. 'For the last 100 years you shall all live in another raging sea'' Aoife said. The swans began to cry. Aoife had Lir all for herself. Lir began to worry and asked Aoife where his children were. She told him nothing. The king found out and banished Aoife from his kingdom. then every day after that he visited his poor children at the lake. He comforted them for as long as he could. the children were happy to have their father. One day Lir died and the children were alone. After 100 years the moved out to sea. 100 years went buy and they went to a different raging sea. One day a princess who lived near the sea saw the swans and wanted them to sing for her. She ordered her servants to bring her the swans. To everyones surprise the swans turned into 3 old men and 1 old woman. The servants brought the old people inside and fed them. That night the four children of Lir died.
