Shereen Maignan's birthday was today, and boy was she excited. She was going to have a party at the skating rink, get a lot of presents, have lots of fun, and best of all, TURN ELEVEN! She woke up and ran down the squeaky steps to see a room full of streamers and balloons. To her right was a table full of gifts with different colorful wrapping paper that stacked so hich, it reminded her of her mom's multi colored shoes stacked up in her closet and Shereen's. It was weird to Shereen that her mom was putting up all of these decorations, for she was already having a party elsewhere. She decided to figure out why.
"Goo Morning birthday girl!" said Shereen's mom excitedly."Are you ready to celebrate this wonderful day?"
"I am so ready! But mom, why all the decorations? You know I am already having a party at the skating rink." she said curious of what her mother's clever answer would be.
"Oh long story sweety, don't worry about it." she saw the i'm-not-going-anywhere-might-as-well-tell-me-i'm-curious look on Shereen's face."Well.......it turns out that the manager who is in charge at the skating rink...well...his mom died and all the other managers won't be able to be in charge to day, and all the other employees will not be able t be in charge because they are helping to orginize the funeral and--"
"OK! It's ok. So what my party will have to bepostpond." she said a little angry but not to upset about what happened.
"Well I know how much you love gifts and opening themm. So I decided that you could opena few of them now!Your father's flight doesn't come in for another day or two, and what is a birthday without famil and--"
"Where is this going ma?" she questioned.
"The point is that, you could just open your gifts right now or whenever, and we'll have your party postpond until later this week or month or year or whatever!" she yelled, out of breath.
"Naw, i'll open them later. I've got other things to do like call my friends and take a shower and sing happy birthday to myself, and take a shower and--"
"BRUSH YOUR TEETH!" interrupted her little sister Asia." ..because your breath is stinkin.
"Oh please Asia. As I was saying, I also have to eat break fast and--"
"Get your birthday punches!Ha Ha!" she was interrupted again, this time by her brother Axon.
"That's enough kids, now all of you go take baths and go play outside or something!" Mrs. Maignan was always the one to stop family conflict among, well, the family!
It was about 6:30, and it was getting pretty dark.Shereen finally opened her presents. She did it alone because if she did it with her brother or sister around, they would laugh like hiieynas if she got anything personal like adiary, or if she got something they they wanted they would whine like babies. She opened all of her gifts. She got a volleyball, a bike, a play cash register, $300 in cash, and an American girl doll. But there was one more. She ripped it open like a snake eating its prey. It was a telescope. At first, she wasn't to interested in it. But after a while her intrest grew bigger. She then decided to try it out, see if it's really the "top of the line telescope" like it said on the box. She went up to her room, opened the window, and stuck the telescope outside, and adjusted it to just the right height. She closed her left eye, and looked throught the hole. She played with the knob until it was nice and clear. She saw all nine planets! She even saw the hot s! un! ! It was sooo beautiful and peaceful, just like a river bank. Everything was a slow as a snail, turning individualy. She had never seen anything like it before! She gradually started jotting down observations monthly, then weekly, then daily! She did this every day until age 21, seriously! Then she started a career in studying Astronomy. Then she was awarded youngest scientist at age 25. This is Shereen's story. It all started with that one telescope. She never forgot her first telescope, for that was the root of her wonderful career.
