The three little kittens were bored. They were three sisters, Katie, Kitty, and Kathy. Their mother Kathleen, had left to go visit a sick aunt for the day and they were all alone.

Their mother had told them to stay right in their little box in the cellar of the Italian restraunt where they all lived. They had tussled and staged mock battles, but now they were very, very bored. So Kitty, a red-brown and white spotted kitten with a brown striped tail, spoke up.
"Lets go upstairs like Momma does!" she said.

"I don't think we should," said Kathy, a white kitten with a brown striped tail, "Momma said to stay here, not to go upstairs."

"But if Momma goes upstairs," said Katie, a brown and white patched kitten, "We can to. I bet she just meant to stay in the store."

So the three kittens climbed carefully out of their basket. Katie almost couldn't make it, and she slipped twice, but she finally hoisted herself out. Then the three sister kittens walked up the stairs. The stairs were merely boards, and they were really far apart. Kathy was really scaredlook at them.
"I don't think we should do this, guys, maybe we can just play in the basement," she said.

"Come on, scaredy cat, don't be silly, it's nothing," said Kitty, but she was a lot more scared than she let on.

They slowly dragged themselves up the first step, then the next, then the next. Suddenly, Kitty slipped.

"MEOW," she said, "Somebody help me!"

She was dangling by her tiny, sharp claws on the edgge of the fifth stair, the ground looked very far away for a tiny kitten. Suddenly the door opened and their mother, Kathleen, bounded down the stairs, past a shivering Kathy and Katie, and grabbed Kitty in her mouth and pulled her down to safety. She got all three of the kittens safely back in their box.
"Why did you disobey me? Whose idea was this?" she demanded.

"Momma, it was mine, I was bored and I wanted to go upstairs, the stairs didn't look so dangerous," said Kitty.

"No Momma, it was my fault, I let her talk me into it," said Kathy.

"No, I helped talk Kathy into coming, it was my fault," said Katie.

"I think you are all at fault. I was going to take you each upstairs, but since I find my kittens can't behave themselves when I am away, I think it will be ample punishment if I don't take you up for another few days. Now do you see to listen to me?"

"Yes Momma," the three kittens chorused in unison.

The three kittens bore their punishement meekly. A few days later, Kathleen took Kathy, the more obedient kitten up. The next day, the other two were alowed up. They are almost grown now, and they have made it a habit to try and obey their mother!
