"Mommy," asked half reading the back of my cereal box, "why is everyone running around for this holiday? By the way, what is a Chinese New Year?"

"Mirium, the Chinese New Year is when we celebrate the coming of the new year, tell stories, have parades with dragons and heroes, and watch fire crackers!" explained my mother.

"Fire crackers?" my eyes widened as much as possible.

"Yes dear." said my mother.

Then my mother gave me a kiss on my forehead and told me to be good and she'd be back from her travels to the market for some food and party favors. "Can you belive it," I told my cat Juno, "fire crackers." Juno mewed to me.

The Chinese New Year was great! I loved it so much! First we ate food and had fun while my relatives and friends come to my home and we all laughed and played. Then later in the evening when it started getting dark we left the house and went to see the parade. Oh, what a parade it was! There were many dragons, bright lights, small ground fire crackers, sparklers, and many fans and different costumes.

Right as soon as it was mid-night a huge fire cracker was shot up into the air and exploded into a million tiny different colored lights with a BANG! It was followed by many different sized, colored, and sounding fire crackers decorating the sky like a sea dotted with enough fish to fill the ocean. The fire crackers were astonishing and were the perfect kind for starting the new year.

"What a perfect way to start the New Year." I said in amazment.

"Mirium," Mom said, "here, take your sparkler. Come and join us while we dance in the streets."

"Thanks Mom." I grabbed her hand.

It was the greatest celebration ever! I'll never forget that year, my first Chinese New Year and I will enjoyed everyone since!
