お話：ジョー　絵：佳那子

キャンプ．チペワはいつものとおりでした。そこには3つのキャビンがありました。さいしょのキャビンにはマリー、ジェーン、マイケル、クリストファー、そしてチャーリー。2ばんめのキャビンにはジョン、ジョージ、モリー、アン、そしてジェームス。そしてさいごのキャビンにはフェルディナンド、ジュリー、マイク、サリー、そしてリチャードがいました。

クリストファーはいろんなことができるおとこの子でした。ある日のハイキングででたかだいは小さな生きたどうぶつをさがすことでした。クリストファーはカエルをみつけるとむちゅうになってしまって、とうとうグループからはなれてしまいました。クリストファーは森の中をさまよいあるきました。するとキツネのすみかをみつけたのです。びっくりしたことに、なんとそのキツネはおはなしができて、じぶんのかぞくをクリストファーにしょうかいしてくれたのです。

「これがわたしのだんなさん、ギョン。こっちはわたしの子どもたち、ギィエスト、ギィーム、ジョイン。」とキツネがいいました。
「きみのおなまえは？」とクリストファー。
「ゴンっていうの。」とキツネはこたえました。

ゴンはクリストファーにかぞくをしょうかいすると、どうしたらきびしいおてんきのなかでいきのびることができるかなど、いろいろなことをおしえてくれました。さいしょに、ゴンはどうしたらクマのようなどうぶつにつかまらないようにするのかコツをおしえてくれました。それはなんだかにおいにたよるもののようでした。にばんめに、ゴンはどしたら木のかわをむいて、にばんめのそうをたべるのかおしえてくれました。それから、どうしたらどくのない、たべられる草をさがせるのかおしえてくれました。さいごに、ゴンはどうやって小さなおうちをつくるのかおしえてくれました。そしてクリストファーはゴンのすみかのとなりにおうちをつくりました。

それから2-3しゅうかんたつと、ゴンとクリストファーはとてもなかよしになりました。あたりはもうふゆになろうとしていて、だんだんたべものをさがすのがたいへんになってきていました。クリストファーはじぶんのしっていることをゴンにおしえてあげました。どのぐらいゆきがつもっているのか、またどうやって雪やはい、ねんど、土をまぜてペンキをつくのかなどでした。さいごに、こおりがどのぐらいあつくはっているのかわかるほうほうをおしえてあげました。そうすればまふゆになって、ゴンはこおりのはったおいけのうえをよこぎっていけるかどうかわかるからです。

はるになると、ゴン、ギョン、クリストファーはみんなでフクロウやシカやお魚などのたべものをさがしにかりにでかけていきました。なつになると、みんなでベリーやくだものをとりにでかけていきました。あきになると、とりたちがみなみにむかってとんでいくのをみんなでながめました。そしてふゆになると、またおなじことをくりかえし。そのころになると、たくさんの人たちがクリストファーをさがしはじめていました。みんなの足あとをみつけたクリストファーはキツネのおともだちのところにいって、もうおいとましなきゃ...とつたえると、しゅっぱつしました。

まいとし、まいとし、クリストファーはキャンプ．チペワ、そしてゴンをたずねていきました。それからというもの、みんなはずっとキツネのゴンのうわさをしたり、ゴンのことを耳にしたりしました。

Everything was usual at Camp Chippewa. There were 3 cabins and in the first cabin were Mary, Jane, Michael, Christopher and Charlie. In the second cabin were John, George, Molly, Ann and James. In the last cabin were Ferdinand, Julie, Mike, Sally and Richard.
Christopher was a very talented child, but on a hike, one assignement was to catch a live small animal. Christopher saw a frog, got distracted and fell behind the group. He wandered off into the woods. He found a fox den. Amazingly the fox could speak. The fox introduced Christopher to her family.

The fox said "This is my husband Gyon. These are my children Gyest, Gyme, and Joyn.
Christopher asked the fox "What is your name?"
The fox answered "Gon."

After Gon introduced Christopher to her family, she showed him how to survive harsh weather and other things. First, she showed him some tricks on not being caught by something that relies on smell, like a bear. Second, she taught him to strip bark and eat the second layer of wood that is edible. And taught him to know what plants were edible and not poisonous. Third, she taught him to make a little kind of house. He made his house by Gon's den.
After a few weeks, Gon and Christopher were close friends. It was starting to be winter and it was getting a little harder to find food. Christopher showed the fox some tips on what he knew like how to know about how deep the snow was and how to make a little kind of paint out of ashes, snow and clay and a little dirt. Third, Christopher taught Gon to know about how deep the ice was, so she could tell if they would be able to walk across a frozen pond in the middle of winter. In the weeks, they learned many things from each other.
In spring Gon,Gyon, andChristopher hunted animals for food,like owls,deer,and fish.In summer they picked berrys and fruits.In fall they watched the birds fly south.In winter it started all over again. By then a lot of people were searching for Christopher. Christopher found their tracks. He went to hix f! riends and told them he needed to go. Then he went.
He visited Camp Chippewa and Gon every year after that. And since then everybody's been telling or hearing the story of Gon the fox.
